Doom 3 Reaches Gold Master, Due August 5th

Rogerpq3 writes "Yes, this is the official word that [long-awaited PC FPS] DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! According to the .plan file of id CEO Todd Hollenshead: 'We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information... [Internationally] the UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (cue Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland)'."

    Its just a tradition thingy

OK, but you must admit it's a weird one. Next up, CNN announces newest headlines in gopher!

and a LOT quicker than bothering putting up a website.

Huh? It would be trivially simple to put up a basic html page on idsoftware.com. Just copy the text of the .plan into such a page. Of course, it wouldn't be craptacular Flash like whatever they paid their expensive web design consultants for, but it would work, and not depend on some random finger server for people to be able to read it with standard tools.

I find it hard to believe that people will actually go out and drop $200 on new video card just to play this on par with the recommended requirements (Radeon 9800).

I just bought a card in November 2003 (Radeon 9600), it's top f'n notch, yet it won't run on par w/ the recommendations? Haha, nice.

People are gonna be very disappointed when they realize they'll need to drop another $150-200 just to play it on TOP of the $50 it costs to buy it.

Christmas list for most people: Doom 3 WITH Radeon 9800 card. Otherwise.. forget it, the game will run like ass, might as well not even buy it.

Maybe people HERE won't be disappointed due to the geek factor, but I know tons of gamers who were really lookin forward to playing this that are just bummed that they either gotta miss out completely or drop the cash for a new card.

heh, I ordered an iBook a while ago(typing from it), yeah, I know they are made in Taiwan. But it hasn't even shipped from there yet, I originally had a shipping date of the 9th, but it got moved back to the 28th. I got a student developer's discount, and I got it BTO, so I couldn't get it from a retailer.
If I don't get an email in an hour telling me it has shipped, I am going to go with a dual opteron. Just easier that way. I'm tired of playing games, I gave them their money, they could give me my computer, I thought that was how this capitalism thing was supposed to work. Experiences like this turn me from Apple fanboy to apple hater real quick.
