SUSE Openexchange Under GPL

Gustavo writes "'Netline Internet Service announced today that it would contribute its OPEN-XCHANGE Server, the core technology underlying the industry's top-selling Linux-based groupware, collaboration, and messaging application, under the GNU General Public License (GPL).' How does it compare to OpenGroupware.org which was open sourced a year ago?"

Gamespot and the BBC are reporting that several thousands of illegal copies of Doom 3 were pirated over the weekend, shaping up to be one of the most pirated pieces of software of all time. One technology correspondent estimates that Activision and id Software lost up to "$2,749,500 worth of software at Doom 3's $54.99 sticker price." Activision has no comment, but Matt Pierce of PC Gamer has some harsh words. John Carmack is reportedly very unhappy. The game is legally scheduled for release today.

I notice the usual specious newspaper calculations. They assume that the whole ticket price goes to Activision/Id to try and make it newsworthy.

They mention that this wasn't unexpected. And really is there much of a solution? Theives have existed from the very start. Technology isn't going to solve the problem.

Really it'll come down to parenting. Most parents do not realize that their kids can/will do this. I know when I have kids I will make sure that they understand that downloading songs, movies, anything digital is not right or fair.

Of course I'll know if a game is pirated. But I hope to make them realize that things are better when you have the rights to them. It might take a grounding or two, but I'll learn them! ::)

That's about 50K copies. This is both 1) a trivial number and, unfortunately, 2) probably quite an underestimate.

Still, I doubt that Carmack is disappointed. He's too smart to not have been expecting it.

How can you loose money in lost sells before you even sell?

After all, piracy is good ...
No, its not. But people downloading the game to take a look at it to form a opinion if it worth buying isnt bad per se either. After all its hard to find a unbiased review. One gamer magazine here made a deal with id not to publish any evaluation of the game just a highly polished 10 pages screenshot collection ...

Finally, Where is that number from? Google doesnt find anything useful with doom3 and piracy ...
