Forgent Squeezing Money Out Of JPEG, Other Patents
deman1985 writes "Forbes reports that Forgent Networks, Inc., developer of scheduling software and holder of a number of technology patents, has settled with both Adobe and Sony for JPEG patent infringement and is going after numerous others to collect their fair share of royalties. The company also plans to go after PVR companies, including TiVo Inc, and MP3 player makers for other various patents they claim to hold. Sounds like more fun in the courts for everyone!" I'm a college student, and one thing our school has is chapel tapes for those who miss the chapels. Now, if you miss more than 4 in a quarter (there are 11 in totality), you must listen to and write a paper about those that you missed. These tapes are provided online through the library.
Now, I'm shafted 'cause its the summer, and I have a registration hold because of the missing chapels, but the chapel tapes are offline because my college refuses to pay $5k to allow their students to stream or download audio that was taped on campus, by students and for students.
Down with these fascist buggers (Arcadia or whoever patented all this ish)!
