Cray CTO Says Cray Computers Are Great

Jan Stafford writes "Linux clusters can not offer the same price-performance as supercomputers, according to Paul Terry, chief technology officer of Burnaby, British Columbia-based Cray Canada. In this interview, Terry explains that assertion and describes Cray's new Linux-based XD1 system, which will be priced competitively with other types of high-end Linux clusters."

We all owe a debt to Cray and especially to Seymor. The Cray 1, Cray 2, YMP, were in their day works of art. Back in the day, I briefly did some support for a shop that had these beasts. The archetecture of the Cray was, back then, in a word: revolutionary. I seem to recall that recently on eBay, the Cray that Apple used in developing the Macintosh was up for sale (probably made few hundred bucks). Also recently there was an article in Wired in which fashionable Geeks were purchasing old Cray casings to use as furniture in their ultimate in posh digs. The old Crays looked like a round love seat married to a round refrigerator. Just the thing to sit on while playing Xaxon on your Atari.
