Doom 3 Beta Patch to Address Config File Cheating
Jason Shoulders writes "There's a discussion at Quake3World about an upcoming change in the first Doom 3 patch. Specifically, Id Software's Robert Duffy has updated his .plan file and mentions making 'r_skipNewAmbient, r_skipSpecular, r_skipBump, and r_shadows cheat protected'. This will force players to use features such as bump mapping and shadows. What settings gray the line between tweaking and cheating?"
It's marked as Troll because the poster chose to convey his message like this "I QUIT PLAYING BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T RELEASED THE FUCKING LINUX BINARIES".
Even though it's probably 100% factual and non-inflamatory, its presented in such a way as to almost scream "TROLL!"
Note: I did not moderate the post, but if I had, this would be why...

So it's perfectly ok to mod down a message that conveys 100 percent factual information if you don't like the method with which the information is delivered? That's called moderation abuse. Please put your petty sensibilities aside the next time you are a moderator and use the moderation system properly. Poor moderation, like the kind your are describing, does nothing but ruin an otherwise excellent online community. It's not a freaking important job. All you have to do is remove the crap, and promote the good stuff. It's an important point in this case, and 100 percent THE TRUTH. I have one of the most popular Quake3 instagib servers up right now, and it takes a hell of a lot of traffic because it's sitting on an awesome network. I would have had no problem putting up a Doom3 server had they released a binary. THAT is on topic. THAT is relevant to the story. Using petty objections to caps and the word FUCK to justify a downmod is not only ludicrous, it's juvenile. Be an adult.
Thank You.

An adult?
You mean like someone who TYPES IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE HE THINKS THAT NOT HAVING LINUX BINARIES JUSTIFIES HIS USING THE WORD FUCK?
You're right... that's pretty typical of most adults.
They are going to release binaries, just at a later date. It's not like 99% of the games out there that HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING INTENTION (notice my adult use of all caps and the F-bomb) of ever releasing a Linux version.

SEE!!!!!
You used an explicative and it perfectly conveyed exactly what you were thinking. As far as saying fuck, well, it's good enough for Dick Cheney. It's just a word. I for one applaud your use of the word fuck to relay your idea. One would hope you wouldn't mod yourself down for doing it. As for Doom3, I'm more annoyed they didn't release the Linux server binary. There are more Linux game servers on the net than anything else. They definitely dropped the ball. Most of the people I know that run quake3 servers simply haven't bothered with a doom3 server specifically because they don't have any windows servers, and don't even see the point in setting one up since using Linux.

I commend you for responding to my asshole response without acting like an asshole yourself. That's seems to be a very rare occurence on Slashdot. I respect and salute you even if I don't 100% agree with you!
As a Windows gamer and a part-time Linux user, I can see both sides of this discussion, however the Windows gamer side of me says "If I had to wait 60 more days for Doom 3 to hit store shelves instead of being released on my birthday (it was, really!), then I'd be really pissed off".
I thought that having to wait for Linux binaries was a pretty standard thing - I didn't think it warranted the use of all caps and the F-bomb.
Would it have been great to have Windows and Linux servers available at the same time? Hell yeah, it would!
Would it have been hilarious if the Linux version came out BEFORE the Windows version? I would have needed stitches from my sides splitting from laughing so hard.
Is anybody going to really go postal because they were forced to wait 60 days for Linux binaries to be available. Doubtful.
