A lot of the fun of being a geek is nostalgia. Remembering past technology and talking about how great it was at the time is awesome.

...but only 20 games? The DS has 41 games right now, not to mention all the compatible GB & GBA games right now. Yes, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but all the hardware in the world isn't going to help you with 20 games at launch.

Then again, the fact that the DS is $200 USD (i'm in Canada) pretty much guarantees that I'm not getting a DS either ;)

Bottom line: DS has Metroid Hunters and a Mario game. Sony has to pull out a couple A-list games for release date or else they're going to falter on the starting line - this might not be the end for Sony, but seeing as how they're already behind in terms of games, it ain't gonna help.

No it ain't heating up. It hasn't even started. And looking at this weak 1st generation lineup, My goodness PSP probably won't hit full stride until 2007. Nothing against Sony, I am just calling it down the middle.

Yeah, I really don't know what Sony's thinking. Why don't they go for the best-selling games, rather than bargain bin crap like Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo*, Dynasty Warriors, Tony Hawk Underground*, Hot Shots Golf, Armored Core, and Disgaea*? You'd think that instead of doing that, they would produce sequels to their most popular franchises and make them PSP launch titles. Oh, wait...

      * Games marked with an asterisk are announced games that weren't on your list. Did you forget about them or did you intend for "first generation" to mean "released the exact same day as the system"?

Weak? Dynasty Warriors, and Minna no Golf (and to some degree Puyo) are HUGE in Japan. If the PSP remains semi relevant in Japan, it can hang on long enough for some major title to win hearts and minds in the U.S. (like Final Fantasy 7 did for the original PS1).

I'm a Nintendo fanboy through and through, but defintely, while I'm not going nuts over the PSP launch line up, it defintely has some strong Japanese titles that can keep it afloat for a bit.

The Mk.1 Gameboy is the definiative handheld though. Just about everyone would recognise it.

Personally I wouldn't go updating the icon until the PSP and DS are out, as putting a GBA SP up there would just get out of date quickly, and putting a PSP or DS could lead to more talk if the (perceived) looser of the handheld war that'll probably happen is picked.

I wonder if this time they will actually give battery life estimates for actual gaming conditions (eg not in power saving mode). Every time they've been pressed, they have refused to clarify it. Of course, based on this comment ("It's pretty close to the retail version."), the system's design might not even be finalized yet, and they might still be re-designing it to try get a decent number of gaming hours off one charge.

Back to the games listed... it just seems to be mostly what many people thought would happen: ports, re-designs or sequels to games already on PS/PS2. It still looks like a neat piece of hardware. But I have concerns over its battery life and durability.

Well, the "RPG" image is of two characters from a game that's 12-13 years old (Final Fantasy IV), and you don't see that getting changed, do you?

Admittedly, this could only be because changing to an image from a more current Final Fantasy would result in massive flamewars.

ebgames always puts items up on a lark (based on rumors and unverified announcments), hoping people will preorder them like hyped up little fanboys so they can have some extra slush money on hand. the $50 price tag on the games is just an estimation to. This whole industry is one big estimation.

More importantly, why is there a slashdot story about how games will be announced later on this week. Nothing has been announced, there's no new news yet... I don't see how this warrants a post.
