While I don't think the PS3 will "obviously" fail, I think it's worth noting that the PS3, for all its supposed success, will be out-sold by the DS Lite this week in Japan. After all, only having 80,000 units tends to hurt your ability to compete with a system that sells over 150,000 units per week in Japan alone. If they don't step up production, then regardless of popularity they won't be able to reach the top spot at all.

The idea is mostly old, except that I've never seen anyone present it quite this way... From what I read of the patent, it sounds like programming in a modern IDE that has a context-sensitive command list. I know it's not really hard-core programming, but Dreamweaver will display common commands as you type them to help you auto-complete things and theoretically get the job done faster.

Imagine that, but with natural speech... They use a grammar parser to figure out that the verb comes next, and as you're typing it comes up with the list of conjugations. This way, if you're shaky in a language and can only remember the infinitive, you can start typing that and it'll let you know what the other forms are.

From a UI standpoint, it sounds interesting. I don't know if it's patent-worthy, but it's definitely worth writing into a future version of MS Word.

Look, the simple matter is that the DS is selling faster than any system ever. Period. And the PSP is easily the technically superior one, but the DS has it beat on price. Everyone said the touchscreen was a gimmick and that nobody would like it and it's turned out to be one of the most intuitive and novel gaming interfaces produced in the past decade.

The way it looks to me, if Nintendo just keeps on doing for the Wii whatever the hell it's doing with the DS, they're gonna have a success on their hands. Probably not take the #1 spot, but definitely not the complete and utter dismal failure the Yankee Group is predicting.

If you're happy with the performance you get under Linux, then there should be no FUD for you... your set up is fine and runs well. But if you'd like to use Windows, but still AMP, I guess you have a little less to fear on the performance tip.

I use WAMP for development and LAMP for production. The main reason is that the server admins want Linux, but can't provide me with a testing server, so my workstation has to pull double-duty. My workstation is often times much much faster than the production server, but it's almost entirely due to the fact that there's no load on it. I've had no portability or migration issues, save for some weird stuff in GD.

I'd say that overall, with my experiences and the text of the article, I can develop confidently knowing that as long as we stay in an AMP environment my code will function well on either platform. That definitely aleviates a lot of FUD from my day-to-day programming.

    (a) turn the ringer to the lowest setting it has (if you left it on at all),
