Windows Upgrade, FAA Error Cause LAX Shutdown

fname writes "The recent shutdown of LAX due to an FAA radio outage was apparently caused by a Windows 2000 integration flaw, possibility related to an old Windows 95 bug. An article at the LA Times claims that the outage was caused by human error, as the system will automatically shut down after 49.7 days (related to this Windows 95 flaw?), and a technician didn't reboot the system monthly as he should have. This happened after an upgrade from Unix to Windows. I don't think blame should be assigned to the technician who missed the task; rather, it seems a gross oversight for the FAA to guarantee that such a critical system will crash after only one missed maintenance task. Who's really at fault?"

    You're fucking ignorant and I can't believe you were marked as insightful. You're more of a troll.

    Windows has a perfectly fine stable, secure, realiable base. Windows 2000/2003 isn't any less stable than Linux, and has a more robust security model. Hell, Linux hasn't even mainstreamed file/object ACLs yet. Sorry, the UGO model and hacking the NGROUPS_MAX and recompiling doesn't cut it anymore.

    What about a directory service that integrates well with Windows and Mac clients? Sorry, OpenLDAP doesn't cut it. It doesn't come close to Active Directory for ease-of-use and scalability.

    You people need to get off your Windows 95 kick. Windows 2003 ain't no Windows 95, despite your cluelessness.

    Most geeks know this is a Downgrade. An upgrade would have been to Linux.

    I saw only one AC post modded up. The remaining hundred or so were modded down or passed over -- quite a few deserving at least a +1. Meanwhile, some registered wiseguy cracks a terrible joke and gets a +5 funny. I thought the moderation was getting better these last couple of weeks... guess the elitist crowd is back.
