Mortal Kombat Deception Classic Characters Hack

An anonymous reader writes "A new hack for Mortal Kombat Deception is making the rounds. A member of Maxconsole has managed to unlock and find a number of classic characters in the game. Until now it was not known how these characters could be unlocked or selected. A trainer is expected to be released shortly, which will make all these characters playable and will only run on an a modded Xbox."

      There are some people who would rather play with friends you know than some random guy abusing his laggy connection to beat you.

      Yeah, I can appreciate that, even though I pretty much only play online with people I actually know anyway, but if the developers were going to have the models in them game, which allows them to be hacked via a modded xbox, then why not just include them as actual unlockable characters for the hell of it. That's my point.

      "only" a million? It's pretty well recognized that the over a million mark is a major accomplishment for online gaming, and was actually a record setter in how fast it took place. You, sir, are a little misinformed.

      Dunno, maybe...playing with some friends locally?

      MK used to be played with people in the same f*cking room...

      (I can't understand why there is such a craze over this title. The MK series has always had horrible gameplay, and the reviews for MK: Deception say that this "feature" remains.)

      Well, they could make the ability to use them "premium content" (I think that's what paid-for downloads are called on XBL?). They'd pretend they download them to your HD but in reality simply flick a flag and save bandwidth and time by already having the data on the game disk.

      Well Zangief, I can understand your bias, being one of the street fighter characters and all, but the early Mortal Kombat games revolutionized modern fighting games as far as gameplay goes. They were the first games to implement juggle combos, which are included in many of today's fighting games (Tekken, DOA, etc) and even your beloved Street Fighter series. They also were the first with a block button which is still utilized in some fighting games. I will agree that every gameplay feature added to MK after MK2 has been utter crap, but you can't overlook the original contribution MK made to fighting game gameplay in the early 90's. I still play the MK series, and every new street fighter game that comes out in the hopes that one day, one of them will come out that doesn't suck.

      PS- I can easly make a case that every Street Fighter game since Street Fighter Super Turbo has had horrid scrub friendly gameplay with the exception of Alpha 2.

      I don't think that MK did such contributions to gameplay. The block button is solely used in some 3D games, and every 3D fighter (that is not a conversion from an old 2D fighter) is based on Virtua Fighter (which has a block button and juggles). Since Virtua Fighter is only a year older than MK, I can say that, most probably the game was developed without influence from MK.

      In fact, the MK game that I most enjoyed, was MK3, due to the run button. I think that it made for a more dynamic gameplay. The dial-a-combo was crap, though.

      I think that the importance of MK lies in the fact that was the game that promoted more than any other, a clasification system for videogames in USA.

      Yeah, Alpha 2 was the best.

      It's actually almost 2 years older, when you consider that MK came out in early 1992, and VF didn't come out until late 1993. I know that MK had been out for a few months by summer 1992, and VF didn't come out until late 1993 (I got hired at an arcade in September 1993). With trade shows and what not, I wouldn't be suprised if VF took the Juggle combo feature from MK, or at least the block button. It came out almost 2 years later, plus with trade shows I'm sure Sega had known about the features if not played MK long before VF. I know I played VF3 about 4-6 months before it even came out in the US arcades because I went to a trade show that year.

      In playing the two games, you can tell as far as the fighting system goes, VF took more from MK than SF.

      The dial-a-combo thing killed it, and the run button turned the game into Run-throw-Run-Dial-a combo-run throw-run throw cheesefest. I always liked the gameplay of MK2, sure it was a bit slower, but there was much more strategy and balanced risk/reward involved.

      The third one was. While hardcore fighting game fans still gravitate more to the Street Fighter Series, MK3 and before always seemed to beat them in the collection boxes, at least at the arcades where I worked.

      Yeah it probably was the best SF game, but I played the early ones (all the way back to sf1!) so much in the arcade I love those too. Overall I think capcom took the better route, improving on good gameplay over time while midway and boon feel the need to change something big or throw in a new gimmick or two every time.

      Both franchises are pretty bad now, I used to play Capcom vs SNK EO on X-Box live and it was pretty shitty. I play MKD on PS2 online now, and it sucks too. Maybe I'm just becoming jaded.

      Mmm, you may be right. But I remember that sega showed some screenshots of a very early VF Demo, almost a year before. Akira was not a ryu clone, but seemed an arab.

      In fact, I would say that MK resembles more SF than VF resembles either.

      Yes, VF has Juggles too, but their execution is very different, because:

      -You cannot jump in VF without flying at a stupid height. There is almost no Jump-in.
      -No special movements per se. All characters had a ton of normal moves, that activates through secuences of movements. No stick commands like those in SF nor MK.
      -No projectiles (every character in MK1 and MK2 had at least one).

      These three factors (and the 3D), made VF a completely different game. The basic ways of juggle in MK don't work in VF.

      CvS EO isn't that bad. The mix of new and old graphics is horrible, and the music and backgrounds too. But the gameplay is...well, not that good.

      Forget it.

      I'm learning to play SF3. Seems like a good game (specially Third Strike).

    on the hacked characters themselves? The screenshots themselves don't offer much and almost no information on them (other than the fact that some are characters from the older games).

    Mortal Kombat was known for "Time Released" characters. Being that consoles can maintain clock time, it could be whats going on.

      Unless I'm mistaken, I can't think of any time-release characters in any of the arcade Mortal Kombat games. All of the hidden characters that come to mind were unlocked by button combinations on the selection screen.

      Is it possible that you're thinking of another game, or that you could give examples?

      He's probably thinking about Tekken. There were plenty of time-release characters in the arcade versions of Tekken 2 and TT, if memory serves me right.

      IIRC, MK3 had time released characters.

      I beleive Mileena, Smoke, and maybe Kitana were all time released, only becoming available after the game had been on for a certain amount of time.

      Noob Saibot was also a time released cxharacter in MK3, I beleive.

      Other characters ended up being added to later versions of the games, like Johnny Cage in MK3.

      No, they were instantly available once a) the MKK had been entered and b)the machine was upgraded to version 3 :)

      Nope, that was Tekken. Mortal Kombat 3 had one character (smoke) who was released with a code (The Ultimate Kombat Kode) in the arcade. See gamefaqs. Maybe the characters are released in some other way (1000 multiplayer wins?) or maybe they just weren't put in the finished game. You have to fight Jax and the other characters in storyline (konquest) mode, so perhaps he was included for just that.

    Seeing how lots of characters were in the Krypt in the last game, isn't it highly likely that these characters will be too?

    And even if that is not the case, since some of these characters do indeed have moves (read the articles for info), I'd say they at least have plans for adding these characters via Xbox Live.

      Not this time. The Krypt is smaller than in Deadly Alliance, and most of the characters are unlocked by playing the Konquest mode in Deception, and almost all the characters are unlocked by getting keys to their tombstones, not through money.

      There is a Krypt FAQ on GameFAQs that tells you what each tombstone in Deception has in it. Kitana, Kung Lao, and the others are not in the Krypt.

    It's sad and tragic because we want a sense of wellbeing fostered in our citizens, and also because another opponent of civilization, and of fraternity in general, standing alone, does not contribute anything, either to our society or to their own happiness.

    Contribution is its own reward, and devastatingly, it's a dish rarely tasted by those who are not hungry for it or those with eating disorders like anorexia or digestive disorders like IBS, if you follow my metaphor.

    The way I see it, you've got three choices here...

    Download the trainer and use it on a modded Xbox, meaning you can't play online anymore...

    Forget that the trainer exists and try to live your life without playing as Johnny Cage or Kung Lao in glorious 3D...

    Or go to GameStop and get yourself a Genesis and a copy of MK2 for $20. If that won't work, wait for the next compilation of classic Midway games, which is supposed to have MK2 and MK3 on it. :)

      It was actually released a few days ago Finally an arcade perfect port of MK2! It's too bad that isn't playable with a ps2/x-box online. :/

      Thanks for the update.

      This is what comes from not having a current console. On the plus side, I've still got my original copies of MK and MK2 running wonderfully on my Genesis... :)

    None of those were in the 1st or 2nd MKs...how can they be "classic"?

    Huh? The code unlocks these characters among others

    Jax, Old Raiden, Kung Lao, Cage, Sonya, Shang Tsung, Kitana

    All of the above characters are from MK2. Three of them were playable in MK1, a game that only had 7 playable characters. Which means that all the characters from MK1 except Kano (afaik) are playable. So yes, the code allows you to play classic characters as described in the summary.
