IE Holes Not Microsoft's Fault, Says Bill

thparker writes "As part of the Media Center release discussed previously, Bill Gates had an interview with USA Today. Best quote: 'Q: Speaking of security, Internet Explorer has had well-publicized holes... Gates: Understand those are cases where you are downloading third-party software.' Well now we know -- these problems have all been our own fault." Any counterexamples?

QUESTION: President Bush, during the last four years, you have made thousands of decisions that have affected millions of lives. Please give three instances in which you came to realize you had made a wrong decision, and what you did to correct it. Thank you.

BUSH: I have made a lot of decisions, and some of them little, like appointments to boards you never heard of, and some of them big. ....
Now, you asked what mistakes. I made some mistakes in appointing people, but I'm not going to name them. I don't want to hurt their feelings on national TV.

Why does this apply? Consider those who respond to Bill's tactics and attitude, and those that respond to Bush's. This is a classic "blame everyone but me" tactic, which the president has been using successfully for a while. Some significant portion of the American public must respond positively to this tactic, otherwise neither of these men would be successful.

Hey, just so you know, 'viri' is the incorrect word in this context. I know it's odd, but the English language is full of these exceptions. The correct plural of 'virus' is 'viruses'.

See here for more info (like what the meaning of the word 'viri' is).

I'll be in Sydney (airport) on Monday (but only for an hour or so before I fly on to Canberra). Are there good pubs in Canberra?

Are there any good LUGs in Canberra or Wollongong? What should a visitor from the US see while visiting Australia (assuming one is also going to do research, collaborate, etc.)?

Technically Bill is right. It's not IE causing the problems -- it's just the unlocked door that the problems wander in through.

But if you have brain-dead users downloading software from popups (not back doors and virus vectors), Mozilla will still have the same problem with trojans and spambot software that IE does.

That's really where Windows has it's biggest vulnerability. My relatives still have to grant their kids admin authority just to run eduware videogames -- and one of the games requiring that was only released two years ago! (I bought it for my niece this past Christmas.)
