How has the USA PATRIOT Act Affected You?

wetdogjp asks: "October 26th, 2004 marked the third anniversary of the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (or USA PATRIOT Act, as it is more commonly known). While the Slashdot crowd can certainly muster the enthusiasm to debate its pro's and con's, I'd like to know: How has the USA PATRIOT Act affected you, personally? How has it interfered with your personal and professional life? Has this act influenced your Presidential vote?"

I was going to the store to buy a hotdog, and was swarmed by cops right after I paid the guy at the register. I'm now serving 30 years in jail.

And on top of that, the Government needs the right to be able gather intelligence against terrorist activites. The point of the patrior act is that they can GATHER THE INTELLIGENCE AND STOP THE ATTACK.
Its not a violation of our rights in the sense that they will just go around and prosecute everyone and use the patriot act as their source of information. They use the information to prevent attacks. I dunno where these weenies who complain about it where during 9/11 but I was in New York City.

It hasn't affected me personally at all. Despite all the ravings from the left, i see no evidence of my precious civil liberties being cruelly violated. That isn't to say that it hasn't caused some inconvenience for immigrants and arabs, but i think most people won't notice anything different at all.

Hopefully not. This is why I support the Federal Marriage Amendment, just so that it's made explicit that the government of one state will not be forced to honor the gay marriages and civil unions allowed by another state.

Please do not forget (or violate) the civil rights of people (voters, business owners, etc) who would be compelled against their own consciences & religions to accept, bless, and fund gay marriages based on the decisions of activist judges.

You may think this, but historical evidence shows that the U.S. depends on educated immigrants to achieve all of the things it is most famous for. Moon landings, the world's most famous media companies, pizza... you'd have none of these things without immigrants.

And I'm quite happy with the British education I have received. So, too, were the numerous American students who had come over here to study at my university... I wonder why they did that if American education's so brilliant?

I wish the ballot would have asked me about gay marriages.
Instead i got some inane question about a topic I did not know much about (my answer was NO): "Should Philadelphia borrow to help revitalize the streets, parks, etc......." While this sounds like a good thing - I just don't trust my local gov't (very corrupt) enough to give them a chance at playing with more money at *my* expense without knowing the full details.
At least with things like "Should we ban or approve gay marriages" - it is straight forward and I can choose on my personal knowledge.

You should stick to the topic at hand, the USA Patriot act, not gay marriage. If you want to discuss gay marriage, start a new article.

For the record, Marriage is a legal definition and the law has a set of rules for those that are married. For one, the dem's had a marriage penalty on taxes as well as other things to screw those that are married. Marriage also has historical meaning going back past recorded time.

There is also the fact that homosexuality is a psychosis and can be cured. There is a good record of recovery. It was removed without any scientific merrit or review back in the early 1970's and removed from the book in mid 1980's. The same group had "man on boy" (aka pedophilia) sex removed about a year ago. We should force those def's back in the definition and treat those that have homosexuality.

This is also much of the reasoning why I disagree with the politicians who decided to put gay marriage ammendments (and civil unions) on the ballots this year.

As it turns out, it seems this was a well crafted scheme by the republicans to mobilize their base of homophobic bigots, and while they're at the polls, they can go ahead and vote for Bush... seems like it worked like a charm in Ohio and other areas.

Gotta hand it to them though- it was diabolically brilliant.
