AirBuccaneers 1.5 for UT2004 Released
istewart writes "Version 1.5 of the AirBuccaneers mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 was released today. This isn't a typical FPS mod, since it's about pirates on balloons and the player is allowed to select from 4 roles on the different craft : pilot, cannon loader, aimer, and musketeer. Hand to hand combat is de-emphasized in favor of strategic air battles."
Nothing for you to see here. Please move along. thats the 6th story ive seen that on today

Game looks pretty cool, though, but wonder if it'll work with Ut2004 for mac?
God Bless America. Why? Did it sneeze?
ABU is a real visual treat. It's gameplay is slow, methodical, and really QUITE fun. If you have a group of friends it's the best way to play, as it requires a TON of teamwork (loading cannon, piloting balloons, scouting for other balloons). Just think of a real-time, 3D, Flying Scorched Earth.. with Pirates..
I've played Air Bucaneers quite a bit and I'd have to say that it's my favorite mod for UT2004. The ballon to ballon combat is really quite fun and once you get a crew of four or five buddies together it's an absolute blast with everybody working feverishly away at their assigned task and the captain yelling "YAAARRR" into the teamspeak server as loud as possible.
Add to that the humerously non-english (finnish maybe?) names and grammer and the comical hideousness of some of the character models and you've got a game that will absolutely leave you in stitches. I've died on many occasions because I have been laughing too hard to properly control my guy.
Can't wait to play the new version.

Another fine example of the creativity of modders. I wish MMOG could harness this creativity since in many cases it seems the dev teams are having a hard time suppling the large amount needed.
UT2k3 is fragmented by SO many mods (Good thinging Epic - launch a 'make something unreal contest' to get 1000 mods for UT!) it's rare you find anyone to play agaist other than the n00b friendly ONS (Onslaught (Vehicles)).
Unreal Tournament is already being dubbed as 'dying/dead' online... just look at gamespy's stats (Which include BOTS in game servers - Currently, there are only
Ad to this, the new games coming out or recently out (PainKiller2, Halo 2, Doom 3, Half Life 2, HL2 Source etc) I think this is a bit too late...

when /. is reporting on the release of one mod for a game nobody plays.
On their site is a link to a trailer clip of the game/mod.
This file is 12.0 MB and contains only 1:10 (70 seconds) of footage. The video stream is 512x384 DivX 5 (DX50 fourcc) at 25 FPS, with an average bitrate of 738kbit/s. That's pretty respectable. However the audio track is UNCOMPRESSED PCM at 22kHz stereo, which comes works out to a bitrate of 706kbit/s. That is just insane - approximately half of this file is UNCOMPRESSED AUDIO.
Had the person used a decent codec, such as VBR mp3 at 128kbit/s average rate, the file size would have shrunk to about 7.3 MB. Or in other words this file is approximately 70% larger than it should be. I don't know who's running their web site but I'm sure they'd appreciate the bandwidth savings if their trailer wasn't made by someone lacking clue.
