    Very interesting data point, thanks!

what we need is a book which describes how to write "simple" code: code that is just as complicated as it needs to be, and no more.

    I think I've found my /. sig.

    Amen brother.

Well, if they love their work, I'm sure the relatively lower pay doesn't bother them so much. That being said, I have a friend who works in the game industry, and works insane hours at times, but also has lull periods, and apparently gets paid pretty well. I think it is a matter of finding the right company.

Ditto what darkitechure said. Not a fan (avoid at all costs) Angel and Buffy, love Firefly.

  5. RTS/FPS on Genre-Defining Games? · · Score: 1

Granted, it's a very very youngish genre, but important, nonetheless. Natural Selection, of course. The most popular to date multiplayer RTS/FPS out there. I give points to Savage for prettiness, and Allegiance for intricacy and hardcore fanbase. But NS really brought the genre to the fore, imho.

Quake is genre defining quite apart from Doom, as Quake was ACTUAL 3D, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were just tons and tons of pretty sprites.

The current version, IIRC, does not support WON, and there are very few, if any WON NS servers (I suppose they'd run NS vers 2.x and below).

NS, that quite old (2 years now?) Half Life FPS/RTS mod is still the most creative/daunting game out there, imho. Multiplayer FPS/RTS against 2 different sides, one which is ranged, another melee, utlizing different command structures and technology. For multiplayer excitement, nothing beats it. ABU is a real visual treat. It's gameplay is slow, methodical, and really QUITE fun. If you have a group of friends it's the best way to play, as it requires a TON of teamwork (loading cannon, piloting balloons, scouting for other balloons). Just think of a real-time, 3D, Flying Scorched Earth.. with Pirates..

ok, some. as most everyone has stated, i'd love to see NS in the nextgen engines. or another RTS/FPS for that matter :D

  12. Multiplayer Environment on Is The Xbox The Cause Of The PC Gamer's Downfall? · · Score: 2, Insightful

PC gaming has another plus that hasn't been mentioned yet. That is, the muliplayer environment. Whereas with XBox Live! you will have to play with possibly some smacktardish stranger, or with a RL friend; with PC gaming, you can join a gaming community, and play on servers that have rules you like (finish objectives, no swearing, don't feed the pandas unless wearing a felt hat, whatever) and end up having IMHO, a MUCH better and more consistent multiplayer experience. As a consequence, you actually end up with a _community_ of people you enjoy playing with, not just a Russian Roulette style of multiplayer gaming where you _might_ play with someone you enjoy playing with.
