I've never seen why jails aren't more like boarding school with therapy centers for the/really/ messed up people.
The only thing that 99% of inmates in the system learn in there is how to be better at crime. Going to jail or prison is like going to college for many people. However, they major in crime. Many small-time losers turn into career criminals because of their company inside. Hell, going to jail for a while will greatly improve the image of gangbangers once they are released.
The very few people that turn themselves around in prison doesn't justify the amount of money and time that is required to baby inmates with rehabilitation programs. (I mean criminal rehab; Drug rehab programs are still a good thing and have a much higher success rate).
just use adium if you're in os x. trillian is obsolete.
I got really excited about the news that Trillian was doing rendezvous because I use adium on my mac and I have wanted to use ichat rendezvous between all of my computers. I think this is the first windows client that can do it. Still have to wait on the linux one apparently...
But rendezvous support is only in the full, paid Trillian version... great.
I got my girlfriend to learn how to use irc! (dead serious) I hooked her up with xchat for windows and now she actually uses it. I've even managed to get a few of my other non-tech friends to use it. Most of them seem to like irc, but nobody understands the point of jabber. To most people, jabber is just like aim, but without anyone to talk to.
I have my multi-protocol client logged into jabber whenever I'm on the others. But it's been a long time since I got an im over jabber...
What I'd really like to know is if the treatment will be a simple once a day pill or a three hour long invasive therapy I have to go through every morning (much like showering).
Ya. Most/. readers haven't even got that one down yet...
I see people bitching about free ipod/flatscreen/etc sigs in the comments all the time. If you really want it to go away, sign up using my link. I only need a couple more referrals.;-) Once I get an ipod, I'll remove the sig.
But seriously, the fact of the matter is that it really does work. I've already had a few people sign up from my sig and from an IRC channel topic with the same thing. I barely even post on slashdot and my IRC channel is always vacant! Yet somehow, it still seems to work. So quit your bitching and just set your prefs to not show sigs if you really can't stand it. It isn't like anyone ever has anything you can't live without in their sig anyway!
I personally found wasting an entire comment to bitch at him more distracting from Slashdot than anyone's sig.
Would be funny, except silencers are extremely expensive and nearly impossible to legally obtain.
As others have already said in response to this, suppressors are not that expensive and are pretty easy to purchase. Someone else mentioned that you just have to pay a nice $200 tax. This is true of all NFA/Class 3 weapons (suppressed, machine guns, short barreled shotguns/rifles). However, there is also a pretty detailed background check which can take between 3 months (rare) and almost a year. My favorite gun store sells all sorts of fun toys like this.
But we are talking about LA, and California is really harsh about gun laws (no "assault" weapons, none of the aformentioned fun stuff). So in this case, getting a can would be pretty hard. Not that gang bangers actually use nice suppressors anyway; cheap, throw away ones are pretty easy to make.
Game looks pretty cool, though, but wonder if it'll work with Ut2004 for mac?
I managed to get it running on my mac, but it crashes as soon as anyone trys to use the cannons. The tutorial, for instance, runs great until you have to adjust the cannon. Then it crashes to the desktop. In instant action, a couple seconds into the game, a bot started to mess with a cannon and the game again crashed.
I suggest we all just ignore both of these things until we have real proof that (a) Half Life 2 is really out for the public to purchase and play and (b) that Arafat is really dead and doesnt have any plans for resurrection.
I've stopped paying attention to all news regarding Arafat's condition and Half Life 2. I was listening to the radio during my 15 minute drive home the other night and when I got in the car, the news was saying that a reliable source close to Arafat said that they were going to pull the plug as soon as some religious leader finished giving him whatever final blessings he needs. Just as I got home, I hear that his doctors are saying that he is in ok condition and will probably last a while longer!
That is about the same as the news about HL2 has been for too long. "HL2 is going to be released tomorrow!" "Oh, wait... Make that next month!"
I suggest we all just ignore both of these things until we have real proof that (a) Half Life 2 is really out for the public to purchase and play and (b) that Arafat is really dead and doesnt have any plans for resurrection.
Speculation about a successor to Ashcroft has centered on his former deputy,
Larry Thompson, who recently took a job as general counsel at PepsiCo. If appointed, Thompson would be the nation's first black attorney general. Others prominently mentioned include Bush's 2004 campaign chairman, former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot, and White House general counsel Alberto Gonzales. [...] Washington continued to buzz with speculation about the futures of Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. [...] Condoleezza Rice, the president's national security adviser, is considered a possible successor for either Rumsfeld or Powell. She has let it be known that she does not want to remain in her current role in the second term, and officials say her path is up or out. Rice said a year ago she wasn't interested in getting enmeshed in the bureaucracy at the State Department, but aides don't rule that out now, particularly with prospects for change in the Middle East.
I was kinda getting a good feeling from this thread until I read this post and a bunch of those that reply to it. At least change the damn subject of your post if you want to do exactly the opposite of what it states. It's over. Deal with it. Just remember that the vast majority of Bush voters are really not that different from the majority of Kerry voters. In the grand scheme of things, we are all the same. We all want the same things for our nation; we just have small disagreements on how exactly to get there.
Also, I wish everyone would get over the image of these guys. So many people are so completely wrapped up in it that they vote based more on image than on real politics. Bush IS NOT a stupid, war-loving, ignorant redneck! Just like Kerry IS NOT a long-haired, elitist, flip-flopping hippie! It is stupid to "hate" either one.
Please, let's all just put all of this election-year bull shit behind us for the next three years, at least.
Where did I ever say anything about a specific velocity? I don't know exactly how hot (no pun intended) pepperball launchers shoot compared to paintball guns used for sport. I've also been playing paintball for about 8 years (although I now only play airsoft). I used to work at a paintball field and I would have to agree with your points about it hurting.
However, remember that this is a non-lethal weapon. It isn't meant to be fun. From what I've seen, they don't shoot that much faster than a normal paintball gun. I think the extra power of these guns is needed for the slightly heavier balls. So they probably shoot about the same velocity, but the pepperball has more mass. Of course the total kenetic energy is what determines how much it will hurt...
These are also not for "riot dispersal" as you stated. As I said before, "Pepperball launchers are not considered at the 'less than lethal' level of force (although rubber impact rounds definitely are). They are on the same level as "stun guns" and normal OC (pepper) spray." Cops don't break up crowds with any of these things unless it is violent. So, it's not as if they were just shooting randomly into the crowd because nobody wanted to leave.
I don't think it is reasonable to say "but this is a clear case of excessive force." because we don't know very much about this incident from TFA. Maybe the cops were all total assholes in this case, maybe they were all completely level headed and used the proper amount of force.
You know what's funny? When I originally bought HL, it was to play TFC. I never even tried out the single player until a few years later when someone mentioned to me that they were playing single player. I loaded it up, found it to be alright, but the numerous multiplayer mods were a million times more fun. So I dropped the single player part after a few days and just kept on having a blast with multiplayer.
Thats probably because by the time you got around to playing the single player part, there wasn't anything special about it anymore. When HL was released, it was an amazing single player game. It brought a new style to gamers and raised their expectations of what a single player game should have.
Playing HL1 single player years after its release and not seeing anything new is kinda like watching the matrix today and being bored with bullet time.
I think you might find anyone who is alergic to it might just die from it, so I think you are wrong in your blanket statement to the safety of this weapon.
That is a good point, although I based my statement on my law enforcement training in the use of OC sprays. The safety of OC was one of the main reasons that the original Mace (I think they now make OC products, too) isn't used much anymore. I don't think there have been any deaths directly linked to the use of OC. I've been searching for a few minutes for info on allergies to it, although I cna't find any info on how bad or how common these allergies are. I can only find that they do exist.
you don't play many sports do you? there are many recreational activities that involve the likelyhood of pain. also i believe that people how partake in paintball games wear long sleeves and masks to keep from getting hit on bare skin.
Actually, I'm pretty athletic. I run and workout quite a bit and I play plenty of sports such hockey, paintball, and airsoft. I used to work at a paintball field. It is true that a lot of people who haven't played before wear ten layers of clothes to their first game, however, most learn quickly that it doesn't really hurt that bad and take a lot of it off. I used to play paintball a lot in short sleeves. Paintball jerseys are incredibly thin; they are practically mesh. Ya, everyone should be wearing a full face mask, as that is the one place that a paintball (or a pepperball) would do damage. However, it is very easy to not hit someone in the head if you aim (ie.. with pepperballs).
I know about pepperballs from working at a law enforcement agency and seeing them used (in training only so far;-).
They don't have to tell them what to do, they just set up the situation and let things unfold "naturally".
You can't let local ordinances (your misspelling is quite amusing in context) trump democracy. If you do, that's just the sort of sign to look for to warn you that you're in a fascist state.
From what I read in TFA (which I doubt is complete from either the protesters' side or the cops'), the police were trying to move the crowd away from the place that Bush was going to be staying at. I live in Phoenix. We had huge streets shut down last week for extra security for the candidates. People aren't allowed to get too close to them for good reason. The police were trying to move the people away from the Inn and they were probably also trying to keep the Bush and Kerry groups apart.
Then some dumbass started pushing the cops. We don't know exactly what happened though, so this is really stupid to argue about. Maybe someone bumped into a cop and the cops then unleashed hundreds of rounds of pepperballs into the crowd... Maybe a couple people actually shoved an officer or two and the took a couple pepperballs and the rest of the crowd was just bitching about the small bit of the cloud of pepper dust that got to them... Maybe the cops used grossly excessive force... Maybe they were actually showing a bit of restraint before shooting. We just don't have enough information to make this a valid thing to argue about.
Shooting people with chemical weapons (they've one-upped the normal mace cans with this one, now they've combined chemical and projectile weapons into one!) is excessive.
Actually, Mace® is way worse than pepperballs because its active ingredient is CS (chlorobenzylidene malonitrile). It is possible to die from CS, although it is not very likely.
The active ingredient in Pepperballs is capsaicin, just like in ordinary oleoresin capsicum (OC/"pepper spray"). It is basically just the same active ingredient that makes a pepper hot. People don't die from it. In fact, I've seen a couple people who are barely even affected by it. (They were both mexicans who ate insanely spicy stuff everyday)
The projectile nature of pepperballs is mroe for delivery than for pain compliance. On bare skin, ya, it might hurt. But if it was really that bad, people wouldn't participate in recreational activites in which one is very likely to get hit many times with paintballs.
Although, I guess I'm probably just bitching about details because you said "mace" instead of "pepper spray." (It is kinda like saying xerox-machine instead of photocopier)
1. Yes, it is basically just a tippmann carbine with a compressed air tank and a really big firing spring.
2. No, they only sell to police AGENCIES. Unless you are on really friendly terms with a police supplier, I don't think individual officers can buy them. Plus, I've only seen them sold in serious bulk, so you probably wouldn't want to dish out the money in the first place.
Pepperball launchers are not considered at the "less than lethal" level of force (although rubber impact rounds definitely are). They are on the same level as "stun guns" and normal OC (pepper) spray. While they do fire a bit faster than a normal paintball marker and the projectile is harder than a paintball, they still do not hurt that much. The primary point is not the impact of the round, but the cloud of OC that quickly surrounds the target. Overall, getting shot with these things is not that big of a deal. OC is totally safe and it would take a very poorly placed shot for the impact to do any lasting damage.
At fairly close range, the pepperball launchers are definitely accurate enough to not hit people in the head. They are semi-automatic, so it isn't as if the officers would be spraying the crowd with pepperballs.
This is not news. It is just as big of a deal as a person getting sprayed with normal OC spray or touched by an electric restraint device ("stun gun"->which really does not hurt... tasers do though;-) by an officer. From the little bit of information in TFA, I would be inclined to think that excessive force was not used in this case. If it really was, this would be a much bigger news story.

I hadn't heard of skype before. Thanks for the tip. It's nice that it works on Linux and OS X.

That's some bad handwriting! It doesn't look like he took any time writing that letter.
Mine is horrible, too, which is why I don't handwrite anything. I think Ashcroft should really do the same...

Cheapest I could find was $220 for a 90 pack...
If you want a good non-lethal weapon, I would suggest a taser.
