In the meantime, the enabling technologies for self-navigating cars are emerging, from sensors embedded in the brake or accelerator pedals to more powerful computers. Already, partial solutions exist for adaptive cruise control or for staying in a highway lane. I remember a Boy's Life (the Boy Scout magazine) cover where they had self driving cars.

It's been a long time since I was a boy scout.

Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed with the technology that's coming out the door but it's been a promise for years with us not much farther ahead.
