Second, couldn't find a damn feed of the liftoff. Nasa's page had both Real and WMP feeds but Real needed update after update and WMP just fizzled. CNN had the same clip it had since this morning. Yahoo was alright but very choppy. Was hoping a friendly /. poster would have a comment to a good feed but.....

I heard there was a practically a media city down there but I barely saw it. sigh.

    oh, btw, congrats NASA!

Although Vass had no knowledge of this, he soon discovered the system in question was in fact the desktop machine of an engineer who had recently left the company. The desktop had been reformatted following his departure, cutting off 600 users who had over the last three years depended on it for network services.

Reminds me of a guy whose leaving our company right now. We're probably not going to delete his homespace since lord knows what will break if the things in there are gone.

It'll take us awhile to get that stuff into a common place. Probably took Sun a lot of time to get that one system back up and running.

The company that changed it--bringing us into the Internet age--was a brilliant flash in the pan called Netscape

    Bastards!

//Although in the "good ole days", there was only dial-up, extremely bad streaming video (if at all), and AOL ruled supreme. Thanks Netscape ;)

  11. Timing? on Founder of Go Computer, Inc. sues Microsoft · · Score: 5, Insightful

Does Go feel they have a better case now that tablet PCs are using pens as a means for control?

In the 1980's pen recognition wasn't what most people would call viable so perhaps this "swift covert action to 'kill' the Go PenPoint wasn't as villanous than. However now, I'm sure there are a few judges that probably use a tablet with stylus and will see PenPoint as a possibly OS in a more favorable light.

    Windows Home = $100~

  15. Stylus on Nokia's Linux Handheld · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been using my Gateway tablet for about half a year now and while the stylus works and works well, it's not something I felt the same level of comfort using as I do when I use a pen or pencil. My guess would be that the stlus seems to slip more over the very slick screen.

In regards to the Nokia 770, the stylus seems to be the primary form of input and command for this device. Unless Nokia has changed the feel of stylus, this might hurt adopters of what looks like a neat PDA/tablet hybrid. Indeed, implementing a small keyboard similiar to the Sharp Zaurus PDA's would be very nice.

  16. Questions on Download Your Brain · · Score: 2, Interesting

Alright, so you've download my brain into a giant (or perhaps in my brain's case small) computer bank. Sure, why not.

Will I than be able to "upload" my brain into a new body? A new cloned body? A completely new body?

If not, since my brain is just stored somewhere is it completely read only, or will my brain have an interface to the world, ie living through the computer? If not, why not. If so, why would I want to be uploaded back into a body?

Sure, I'll nod my head and say why not that you'll be able to download the entire human brain into a computer. But there are far to many other questions which would involve far to much more work to say this is a viable alternative for the rich.

And on another note, seeing as harddrives crash on me like nobodies business, we'd need a more reliable medium than what is currently available today.

  17. Certain Information on OpenID - Open Source Single-SignOn · · Score: 3, Interesting

while it certainly would be nice to login to one spot and be logged into all my favorite websites, as a webmaster I use different information based on what part of my site the person is logging into. Their username/password might be the same for both pages but a cookie might be set on one that isn't on the other and doesn't need to be on the other or could be harmful if done.

Admittely, I need to read up on this, and it's definitly an interesting idea to have a single login but I think there are some behind the scenes issues that need to be worked out.

Also the decentralized nature of the servers has me worried/confused. So if I ran one, would I have everyones authentication information?

  18. Shills on Microsoft Taps Bloggers to Promote Longhorn · · Score: 5, Insightful

Whoever is part of this "Team 99" will be consider shills and rightly so. There's one thing using the Internet to express your point of view. It's quite another to extol a companies product for their backing.

If this group was treated as an unbiased reviewers, I'd have more sympathy but as it is, it seems just another corrupted media.

  19. Pros and Cons on NetBSD - Live Network Backup · · Score: 4, Insightful

This would be an extremely sensitive server system. With everyones harddrive image just waiting to be blasted to a blank harddrive, the potential for misdeeds is staggering. Even in an offical capacity, I really feel uneasy if my boss was able to take a copy of my harddrive image and see what I've been working on. Admittely, yes it should all be work but here we are allowed a certain amount of freedom with our laptops and I wouldn't want to have that data at my bosses fingertips.

On the flipside, this would be a boon to company network admins especially with employees at remote sites who have a hard crash.

Another reason to build a high speed backbone. Getting my 80GB harddrive image from Seattle, while I'm in Norfolk would be a lot of downtime.

  20. Business Choice on Dell Still Intel Only · · Score: 4, Insightful

This means more business for HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems (if of course Businesses in the market for servers choose AMD).

Dell has chosen to stick with Intel which isn't the worse choice. It means lost profits but it also means less support for two distinct chips.

It is up to the above three companies to prove to Dell (and Intel) that AMD is a viable alternative by speaking with their dollars and buying Opteron servers

  21. Copyright on Google Readies Platform for Video Distribution · · Score: 5, Insightful

please be sure you own the rights to the works you upload

I think that's going to be the biggest hurdle for this service to overcome. I think this would be a great service for smaller production teams or individuals looking to release their creations (although there are a number of services that already do this I believe). But to me, this new service will be largely deluged with people looking to trade bootleg videos, pr0n, etc, as again almost all the other similar services are.

    pending our approval process

so, is it someones job to look through every video when it's uploaded? To catch any copyright infringement. Again, this seems like a real problem for this and any other similar service.

All the rest is just FUDD that programmers worry about. Your common user doesn't much care. If both IE and Firefox were on every computer we'd see people use the one that got the job done.

I assume most of these patents were bought with for the TiVo Recommends functionality. I'm sure they can (and will) be used to gather information about the end user but that's not what I'm concerned with here.

As an owner of two TiVo's, I've always disabled this feature. It's not that I don't want to know what TiVo thinks I might like, that could be interesting, it's that for the most part, this feature has always been pretty wasteful. It's recommended shows that relate to other shows I've only recorded once. Instead of recording the shows, a Tivo page with suggestions and say the teaser would be much more helpful.
