    Hear me out...
The TOTL G5s cost about $2500, IIRC. I can get a much better x86-based computer for the same price. The same goes for every other price range of Macintosh computer. This, coupled with the fact that there weren't (until the new unix-like OS) very many programs that run on Mac, lead to it's doom. Mac died a loooong time ago, and the diehards aren't going to save it from being Apple's biggest sinkhole. Apple should focus on doing the things that provide revenue for them, such as iTunes and the iPod. Not making overpriced and overrated PCs that cannot compete with the x86 market.

in any case, they ipod seems to be something for people who like music in the same way as people who listen to top 40 radio. im sure there are exceptions. but its for people who hear a song somewhere (crappy repetitive radio, shitty commercial, shitty movie, shitty tv show, shitty party, etc) and download it onto their lame less then sufficiently featured ipod.
seriously i dont give a damn if apple are viewed as innovators here or if they have helped popularize personal digital music hardware.
if you buy an ipod and strap it to your belt - you are a loser.
if you buy an ipod and carry it around in your hand - you are a loser.
if you find yourself happy to see any of apples vibrant multi coloured silhouette television or print ads - you are a loser.
if you like any songs featured in said television ads - you are a loser (or at least only 'like' music like the 80 percent (not actual statistic) of 'music listeners' ("oh thats a catchy tune ill download that shit")
if you would EVER consider buying a U2 or 'no doubt' branded piece of hardware - you are a piece of shit.
if you use the bundled piece of crap ear buds - you are a piece of shit half-a-man, especially if you have gel in your hair.

honestly, i have been searching for a piece of harddrive based portable music equipment that would do everything i want it to, but theres nothing really out there at the moment.

The iPod is a phenomenon because Apple made a product with the best combination of features and it took a very long time before anyone could touch them.

Bollocks. It's technologically inferiour. It is very limited in what you can do. Each update deliberately breaks functionality that Apple deem undersirable; not the kind of product I want to buy into, I tend to go for the ones that have more features as time goes by. It DOES have a great UI, something Apple are very good at.

The iPod succeeded because it had a great mix of features, and to beat it your player will have to do the same.

Sigh. You really don't know the power of marketing, do you? Everyone seems to think the iPod is the best around, when technically it isn't. The point of marketing is to make the marketplace believe that your product is the superiour one. When you are in a shop, this familiarity breeds trust and product recognition. It clearly is working.

Many music CDs contain songs that blend into each other, and importing them to iTunes may create a small gap between songs that interrupts the flow. If you use the iTunes Join Tracks feature, the program melds two or more songs into one, continuous gap-free track. So now you can enjoy listening to classical music, concept rock albums and extended dance mixes without the silent treatment.

ok - to be fair my first example is from an iPod specs page and the second is from an iTunes page, but surely most people expect both iPod & iTunes to play music in the same way?
