In Japan, Old People Talk to Robots
stupidfoo writes "AFP is reporting that, starting today, "Japan's growing elderly population will be able to buy companionship in the form of a 45-centimeter (18-inch) robot" designed to help them avoid senility. The robot, named Snuggling Ifbot and developed by Dream Supply, will be able to respond to verbal commands. "If a person tells Snuggling Ifbot, "I'm bored today," the robot might respond, "Are you bored? What do you want to do?"". It retails for 576,000 yen (5,600 dollars) and there is no English version currently available but "its makers plan to program the robot in English -- not for export, but to teach the language to Japanese children.""
In Soviet Russia, the dead horse flogs YOU.
See this brings up an interesting point.
The normal joke is:
Instead of "you ", we have " you"
But what if the subject is not you? Do you replace " " with " " or is it always " YOU"?
Ok, ok, back to work...

I think it should be 'In Japan, Only Robots Talk to Old People'
How is that sexist?
Or... ...who am I? Why do I have no mod points?
Ignorance is curable, stupid is forever.
In Soviet Russia, Article about how in Korea, Hearing about how "in Japan, Old People Talk to Robots," is only for Old People! reads YOU!
Agreed.
Not such an infective meme... sorry.
As the poster, I to wonder why it is offtopic.

nopes. the correct formula is
In Japan, Robots are only for old people.
Hack your mind out of its sandbox.
where am I... why have I got no pants on...

So what you're saying is that I should start questioning why I have no pants on!

Take off every 'ZIG' !!
So, basically it's like a $5,600 version of /. and Fark. ...now where did I put my underpants... /31 //seriously fscking senile already
Yes, and "old people talk to robots... in Japan!"
Prescriptive grammar:linguistics
That dude's up to something I know it. I think OldBot and the toaster are planning to kill me. They think I'm senile but....shhhh shhhh... here comes the Roomba - shut up a sec.
la lalalala le li la la la - yo hey Roomba what's up?
"mmmmmmmmmmmmwhushhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
yeah cool.
So anyway I came home yesterday and I swear I saw toaster and Oldbot talking about something.... I think I better start wearing flipflops in the shower......
Kids these days can't even get the joke right!
That's because, in Korea only old people get the joke right.
God invented whiskey so the Irish would not rule the world.
Thanks for the insightful comment. I always enjoy seeing posts from the Slashdot editors.
Ahhh, but it's actually quite an incisive critique of the parent story, as /. seems to be attempting to spread another meta-joke: the "In Korea, only old people..." etc.
Or maybe I'm giving AC too much credit. *grin*
I wish I had a kryptonite cross, because then you could keep Dracula and Superman away.
You know I still think this one has some life yet due to this article. The original version was pretty lame because you could only change the subject and nothing else. You couldn't take that joke very far. We can now permute it by saying:
"In [name of country], [subject] is only for old people!"
So now it's the "old people" meme instead of the "In Korea" meme. Yes, now it has potential I think.
My appologies. I'd like to note that the "Old Japanese Fella" in my previous comment also suffered from a speach impediment brought on by a stroke earlier in life. The origial name for the actor in my dialogue was "Old Japanese Fella with speach impediment who loves big time holywood actors". As you can plainly see this name is too unwieldly and was sited by the producers of my comment for change. Perhaps later, in my comments "directors cut" release I will be able to make amends for this tragedy.
"Capital punishment makes the state into a murderer. Imprisonment makes the state into a gay dungeon-master"
An honest question: How was that post racist? If anything, it was ageist, as it makes fun of the old and senile, bet racist? come on.
There are no tiger attacks in my area and it's all because this rock I'm holding keeps the tigers away.
But is a single racism also funny? Or does it have to be plural?
