Final Fantasy XI Benchmark 3 Released
Sidicas writes "Squaresoft has released a new version of the benchmark for Final Fantasy XI. The new version includes a preview of the Tavnazian Archipelago from the Chains of Promethia expansion pack. The benchmark is full of eye-candy and makes for one heck of a screensaver!"
I dont think that this will replace 3dmark anytime soon. Nor will it replace the new HL2, Doom3 or Far-Cry benchmarks. Maybe it will add onto them, but, never replace it.
Squaresoft is dead you insensitive clod!

No one cares. Final Fantasy XI is easily the worst MMORPG out there. For every enjoyable thing in the game, there is an enormous amount of things wrong with it. In fact, I would go so far as to venture that the only reason it sold was because it was a Final Fantasy game.
Yes, hopefully all the mouthbreathers and asshats will migrate to EQ2 and WoW, so those of us who actually enjoy the game can enjoy it that much more.
If nothing else, FFXI has the best damn control mechanism of any MMOG out there. WASD makes you run in the direction you push, and the arrow keys move the camera. I haven't touched the mouse in-game in over 10 months.
From what I can tell, the people who hate FFXI the most are the ones that insisted on using mouse+keyboard instead of keyboard only or ps2-style controller and keyboard. If I was still using the mouse, I'd hate it too.
On Win2k, the installation fails with the error 'data1.cab' is missing :(

Well, I downloaded and installed the "benchmark." My computer isn't the top of the line, but this benchmark dragggggged on it. The music playing in the background is really annoying, too, making the "experience" really annoying.
I got a score of 4303-L (2629-H), whatever that means. For some reason, this "benchmark" doesn't report FPS. So I used FRAPS instead. I got something like 5-12 FPS on most of the scenes (low mode), although I expect the average FPS was something like 15 or so because various sections shot up to 50.
According to their page (look at the bottom of the page linked in the article) this score marks my computer as "Incredibly tough: We assume that your computer can run FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows excellently with the default settings." Considering how bad this looked in the benchmark, I can only assume the benchmark is purposely stressing their engine, because it ran like crap. Either that or FFXI would run terribly on my system and their score thing messed up.
Anyway, the graphics looked, as mentioned in the title, rather uninteresting. There were lots of identical little Elven children (I guess) running around a field, which has a couple of trees around it. The demo runs at 640x480 by default (and yes, I was getting 5-10 FPS at 640x480), and the graphics just looked awful. They manage to look really blurry. At first I thought this was because I have an LCD monitor and the graphics were simply being scaled poorly, but then I noticed that the FPS counter in FRAPS looked sharp.
I re-ran it in the "high" resolution mode (1024x768) and the graphics looked a lot clearer, but of course this gave me a worse FPS of about 5-10 usually and an average around 9 or so.
The thing I noticed in the Demonstration, which is a cutscene in the game or something, is that the textures seemed to be offly pixelated and lacking detail. All in all, very bland graphics and environments. The environments showed all appeared to be very uniform and uninteresting - generic D&D style "fantasy" fare.
Now according to the copyright displayed throughout, the game is two years old (Copyright 2002-2004). So I'm curious. If this is a new engine, then I guess that would explain why it ran so poorly - but it wouldn't explain why the graphics looked so vanilla. If it's a two-year old engine, then it's kind of scary that it ran so badly, especially considering that my machine runs World of Warcraft at 1280x1024 with no problem.
Ultimately, based on this "Benchmark/Demo," I would have to assume that FFXI would be a dismal experience on my machine, even though the score says otherwise. I'm kind of curious as to how well the game plays compared to the benchmark. Based on other posts in this thread, some FFXI player will be glad to "politely" explain this, after calling me a "stupid motherbrother" or something.
"Ballista = money for grinding" .... no comment
After watching this benchmark, my system is indeed sutible to run this game. The question do I have the time to play?
