Countries Plan Land Rush in Warming Arctic

Noel Bourke sent in a pointer to this story about northern nations maneuvering to claim land in the Arctic. Fossil fuels, shipping lanes, and fishing are among the economic interests at stake, in an opportunity opened up by the melting Arctic ice.

This seems to be another one of those myth stories that just float around. American forces with superior tech beaten by foreign forces with inferior tech in war game X in location Y. Rehashed again and again and again. Blah blah blah. May have even had a modicum of truth to it some years back, but who knows? I've heard other versions of it too. British forces defeated by spanish forces. Russian forces defeated by X. Like noise output has anything to do with how new US subs detect other subs. There's this fancy thing called "sonar" that's been around for 50+ years now, maybe you've heard of it?

But of course, what would one expect from a poster with an anti-US, intellectually dishonest site like antiwar.com in their profile. It's a great story to mock the US with!

Tell me friend, how many women have been executed in soccer stadiums in Afghanistan over the past year? When your short sighted views on Iraq are proved wrong, what will you turn to next to push your anti-US views?

It's controversial because of the debate over man-made versus natural cycles. It's been politicized so that the left believes it's man-made (to go with the pro-nature crowd), and the right believes it's a natural cycle (to go with the pro-industry crowd).

Until people can recognize their own biases when coming to the discussion, it will be a lot more difficult to have any meaningful conversation on the matter, which is disappointing because you'd be amazed at how expanded your worldview can get when you talk to someone whom you disagree with but who is very eloquent about their position. Unfortunately, the anonymous nature of Slashdot as well as the problematic moderation system makes it hard for us geeks to have any such meaningful discussion at this point in time.

No, they don't. A majority of scientists? Not one of the scientists I know - who doesn't work for a lobbying group or left-leaning "think tank" aka lobbying group - claims to believe that Global Warming is caused by humans.

So, where do you get the idea that "a majority" have formed a "consensus"? And more importantly, how do you know that they came to that conclusion based on solid reasoning and not just from accepting what "everyone knows"? Scientists aren't immune to that, you know.
