Michael Powell to Leave FCC

Anonymous Slashdotter writes "Michael Powell, chairman of the FCC, will be stepping down from his post soon. 'Powell, who maintained a light regulatory hand as the nation's chief media watchdog but collected some of the largest indecency fines against U.S. broadcasters, planned to issue a statement Friday but was not expected to hold a formal news conference, these officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.'"

I don't get to listen to Howard Stern anymore but he a Michael Powell had some confrontations, at least from Howard's side, from indecency fines causing Howard's' show to go to Cirrus (at least Howard says which may be a marketing ploy). I wonder if Howard has addressed this on his talk show yet and if he is declaring victory or just going to sweep it to the side a go wild on the uncensored airwave?

It is funny how CBS is against pay $555,000 in fines for the Janet Jackson garbage yet Michael Powel pioneered the effort to fine the perpetrator - this is where Howard Stern falls into play because his company would pay the fines in the past as he couldn't have payed the millions he has racked up. Do you think it is fair to fine the broadcaster or the real criminal? Think before you answer - have you ever heard an F bomb on TV at a football game; imagine getting fined for yelling at a game simply because it was on the TV. Me I think Powel did some good things in deregulation and if the F bomb isn't acceptable on TV then it should be fined in a public forum too. If nipples aren't acceptable in public then it is a criminal act upon the individual that should pay.

"But he's republican so let's focus on the stuff we don't like."

The stuff we dont like also happends to be 10 a penny, where as the "stuff we do like" is rare as rocking horse shit.

    The focus is quite justified.

Well, frankly Howard Stern is a diva/hypocrite. Mr. "Freedom of Speech" has shackled rival DJ's with orders not to say his name on air, namely popular rivals "Opie & Anthony" when they were both working for Infinity. Stern made Mel Karmazin muzzle them with threats of being fired if they uttered his name. I'm not saying Stern was being unjustly targeted by the FCC or not, but lets take what big mouth says with a grain of salt.
