Depends on your database. I know I have been able to bring SQL server down with a query.
Try this...
begin transaction
update rows set a=b where x=y
commit transaction.
On your workstation this could run really fast because you only have ten records. On the production database server this could crush the server if you had a few million records effected.
>ust asked him about this--he says part of the reason he avoids FOSS is not the software... it's the community. He got tired of dealing with the folks who looked down on him because he has certain business functions that he is required to use Windows for.
Sounds like he is also suffering from paranioa.
1) He thinks it's not possible to get support for open source.
2) He thinks he can successfully sue a proprietary software company and hold them responsible for defects in software.
2a) He has never read a EULA.
2b) He thinks he has the resources to take on MS, Oracle, etc.
3) He thinks the "the oss community" is "looking down on him".
You completely missed my point but I would not expect anything different from a guy who feels a compulsion to defend a corporation from people who say bad things about it. It's a fucking corporation. Don't get your panties in a wad OK.
Anyway.....
What separates humans from animals is the ability to transmit information from one person to the next and from one generation to the next.
MS and Bill Gates have been fighting very very hard to try and prevent the propagation of information by pushing for and constantly trying to improve DRM.
In a very real way Bill Gates is attacking what it means to be a human being.
The CEO of harley davidson has himself said they are in the fashion business not the motorcyle business. Harley Davidsom makes more money off their apparel than they do off of their (overpriced and expensive) motorcycles.
Come to think of it the cycles themselves are nothing but fashion accessories. The japanese bikes are better in every objective criteria.
How many people use autocad and photoshop? Most photoshop users are on macs anyway. The only people who use photoshop on windows are the ones that stole the software.
So yea if you need autocad use windows. If you don't get a mac or use linux.
I must say if you choose a piece of software which forces you to use the operating system of their choice I have no sympathy for you. Might as well give them power of attorney over the rest of your life too.
When somebody dies don't strap electrodes on them and shock them back to life. When somebody dies don't give them mouth to mouth and bring them back to life.
Leave the dead alone.
Now I know this will be difficult if your child has died from drowning or your grandpa died from a heart attack but we as a society must accept that people are going to die eventually. No matter how many times you bring them back to life they are going to die anyway.
Maybe new stigmas can be attached to people raised from the dead. Maybe if people started shunning the living dead and called them zombies and such the relatives would refuse to bring dead people back to life.
Everybody always brings up google and python. Does anybody know what percent of code at google is python? Is it mission critical code or just some sysadmin scripting?
Oh and they installed sharepoint where I work. The workers refused to use it despite threats from management. I was shocked at the degree of revulsion the users expressed.
We ended up ditching it and installed plone. Seems to much better liked. What's shocking was that it was faster then sharepoint. Go figure.
>Security is about the best tool for the job and it's not always the Open Source tool,
Maybe the best tool for the job is not the open source tool but it's never the tool made by MS.
>Locking down desktops and client machines is a key security method and AD offers about the best way to do this on the market - I suppose you use Samba and about 500 perl scripts, instead, do you?

>here is still only one data store in gemstone according to the blog post. Can it be scaled beyond that?
You mean beyond the 17 petrabytes it supports now?
>How?
You add more instances (servers). Any modification made to any server will propogate to the other servers.
>I've never heard of any big website using gemstone.
So? Why should I care whether you have heard of something or not? Why is that relevant?
Have you ever heard of seaside? Smalltalk? Dabbledb?
>If it was open, I'd be more willing to kick its tires, knowing that small problems could be fixed and a community might arise around it.
More than likely there will be a free and limited version you can try. Till then you can try this
http://seaside.gemstone.com/
You may want to google gemstone and "avi bryant".
Google is a fantastic resource to ease your ignorance.
Remember just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exit.

This guy is not playing with a full deck.
>Because on any other issue besides FOSS,
The issue is not FOSS. The issue is your bosses ability to make sound and rational decisions.
>He's been CIO of where I work for over 20 years, and not shot himself in the foot yet.
Except this one time. You yourself admit the decision is irrational.
Maybe his mind is going. Maybe he has brain tumor. Maybe he is ill in some other way.
Either way he has lost the ability to make rational decisions. He is making decisions based on ignorance and superstition.
In short he was become a zealot. He has ruled out an entire category of solutions simply because of some ideological belief.
Trust me this is not going to end up well for anybody involved with the company.
People like that should not be put in position of responsibility.
Who do you continue to work for somebody who is that stupid and irrational?
Clearly the man lacks the capacity to make sound decisions and your company is not going to last very long.
One day he is going to make a business decision based on the phase of the moon or something he read in his horoscope and sink the business.
You completely missed my point but I would not expect anything different from a guy who feels a compulsion to defend a corporation from people who say bad things about it. It's a fucking corporation. Don't get your panties in a wad OK.

Don't be so fucking daft.
Osama Bin Laden gives money to orphans that doesn't make him a saint.
Giving money away doesn't undo what you have done.
Hey you've got right wing zealotry in my monopoly.
Hey you've got monopoly in my right right wing politics.
Ah two great evils that taste better together.

the answer is simple.
Stop brining people back from the dead.

>It's not stupid if successfully addresses the problem at a lower cost than the 'right way'.
It's stupid to think that it solves the problem.
Really, I want to know the company. I don't ever want to work for them, consult for them or invest in them.
Could you please let me know the name of your company either here or via a private email so that I can make sure I never invest in it.
Your management is amongst the stupidest I have ever seen anywhere and I want to make sure I don't invest in a company being run by such idiots.
Imagine taking down every server and cramming it full or RAM rather than fixing a bug. Holy crap that's stupid.
You remember how the 9/11 hijackers left a video tape of flying lessons in their car? Yea just like that.
You remember how their passports survived the fire that brought down two buildings by melting the steel support structures?
Yup. Just like that.
I love anybody who causes Rush any pain no matter how minor.
>Someone has totally misunderstand the concept of freedom.
That's you.

With feisty it was possible to install but the wireless didn't work and it never hibernated properly. With Gibbon it won't even install.
Yes it's the ATI model.
What to you mean "try the x64 version". It doesn't have a 64 processor.
I have an inspiron 9400 and I haven't been able to get any linux running on it.
That's the problem with dells. No two dells are alike. Linux support is a complete crapshoot. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't.
I would love to get ubuntu working on mine.

X. Look it up.
Most people are idiots and make bad decisions.
As proof I present you with George Bush, Laverne and Shirley, Paris Hilton, Big Mac, Ford taurus.
It grows every year. There is no reason to think it won't keep growing in 2008.
Is that why MS paid lindows money?
Lindows was about to invalidate the windows trademark in the US, after that it's all dominoes.
What happened to that story about how MS had signed up so many voting members to ISO that no quorum could be reached?
I suppose they will crawl out of the woodwork for this vote but one would think there would have to be other votes in the lead up.
