New IRC Network For Open Source Projects

Anonymous Coward writes "The folks over at Tech Tower IRC have decided to turn their small IRC network into a place for Open Source projects. They have also changed some policies to allow users on their networks to help shape the network, the big one is holding public meetings to discuss the network. Could this be the next freenode? They are also asking for individuals that wish to found general channels, this means that if you are lucky, you can lead the next #linux."

why do you need a new irc network? has there really been some open source folks thinking that "oh gosh, i'd like to have an irc channel for this project.. but damn i can't do it on any of the currently online free servers"?

    was someone too bored again?

Personally, I've never had any troubles with warez and porn on Freenode, so I don't even know what you're complaining about.

You don't need another Freenode. There is no relevant reason for this new network. Freenode works well, and most of the users are intelligent and helpful.

Is there a lot of warez and porn on Freenode? I've never noticed. Mind you, I only sit in one social and a few project channels (go #squeak !)... Unlike other networks, I've never had problems with spambots coming into channel and posting message about porn sites, and I've never had those random msgs with the same content.

So, in short- why not just use freenode?

    Nope, nothing wrong with FreeNode.

But, geeks like to feel important some times, so they, instead of helping the current system be better, they just make thier own thing. Which is ultimately destructive to the community, because that means there are less quality in the networks and people, usually.

This has happened before, see the OFTC network. All it does is fragment the community, as I have to be on this network for #openbsd, that network for #mozilla, the other network for #gimp, etc etc etc. I want one network, one signon, and one nick!

I'm kinda amazed that all opensource projects use cluttered and amazingly annoying ircd's.

    Like freenodes dancer:
Server There are 9541 victims and 10397 hiding on 24 servers

But if you do lusers again it states:
Server server load is temporarily too heavy, please try again later?

But ircu based networks has no problems with:
Server There are 41787 users and 74748 invisible on 31 servers

Unreal is to me a insane server to use...

I'm just waiting for a "opensource projects network" to use something sane. But then working on ircclients and servers i guess i'm biased, esp since i prefer Undernets ircd.

Until someone does a OpenSource p2p im system that is totally distributed etc etc etc, and ppl actually use it. Then just let programmers use whatever network they feel like using.
