I used FLAC for a while, and I found that it compressed rock to about .75 of original size, and G'd up thuggin' west coast gangsta rap to .60 of original size. I assume that rap compresses better because it has much more redundancy, that is, "wut wut wut" and some bassline will compress better than your everyday rock song.

In terms of cpu draw, I found that ripping a CD was not CPU bound when using FLAC, but limited to the speed of the cdrom drive. Even still, PC cdrom drives can process the audio off of a CD on their own (See grey cable) which is a testament to how little processing raw PCM data must take.

Does anyone actually wear clothing like this? I personally can't stand big logos or clothes that represent a non-athletic company, geographic location, or event, no matter what the logo is. I just can't picture myself ever wearing clothing about an OS outside of my toolshed, or at some that-os meeting.

I can understand a mug, a coaster, or a bumper sticker (on a beater pickup), but a shirt? I think it would be better to make things that actually relate to an OS, like a computer chassis, or those hard DVD covers, or _something_.

If I got OS-apparel as a present, I would wear it when I am working on a vehicle, or working in the yard.

  17. Hopefully on Interview With Matt Dillon of DragonFlyBSD · · Score: 3, Interesting

Hopefully Matt Dillon and his team of developers can come through for us, and make a great OS that meets the hype. Currently, I feel that DragonflyBSD has a high sticker-to-horsepower ratio, which is not so much the fault of the developers, but rather the fault of a large pack of fanboys having premature ejaculations over an OS that is by no means finished yet.

Years ago, FreeBSD fanboys said that FreeBSD's SMP implementation was going to be the best the world ever saw. Now, those same people are saying how much it sucks, and that DragonFlyBSD's is the boss of the boat. How about instead of all of this talk, we let the installations speak for themselves? FreeBSD is approaching a fully mpsafe kernel (albeit somewhat asymptotically) and I continue to be impressed with each release of the 5.x series. DragonFlyBSD has had one release, and it looks fine, but fact of the matter is, it's just not finished yet. I'm getting a little tired of all of the talk. Show me these DragonFlyBSD machines making water into wine. What we are dealing with is the classic "penis size" argument, and yet no one has brought a ruler to the scene.

I hope that DragonFly _does_ trounce FreeBSD in both performance and useability, so that I have a new OS that is greater than the greatest. I'm just going to wait until it's finished and showing it's stuff before I start playing with myself.

I have gotten a few complaints about Firefox, of which few are even remotely valid.

I always make a specific effort to not force things on people. The only reason I get to telling them to use firefox is when they rant about spyware or whathaveyou from IE. However, once it's installed and not a verbatim IE copy, some of them start to pout and say that it's stupid. They don't like how "Copy Shortcut" is now "Copy Link Location," and so on.

Firefox is certainly not perfect, but from _my_ vantage point, the only people that have complained about it are the same people that can't figure out how to use Windows Explorer instead of My Computer, and have no idea where C:\ is. I am _not_ a zealot, but I do have a bottom line, and these people are below it.
