Doukutsu Monogatari Translated into English
Yosho writes "Doukutsu Monogatari, a freeware platformer for Windows by the Japanese Studio Pixel, has been translated into English. The game has been making a lot of waves in the freeware gaming circles recently, and for good reason; it's quite fun, and it's comparable to commercial games in length and depth."
Those were the days! Today, the Japanese-English translation is just boring.

"Homo sum et cogito ergo odi profanum vulgus et libido."
According to the author of the game, it's also available for the Mac.

All your game are belong to us.
the game looks like shit. where is the innovation? whats so fresh about this game that would make me want to waste my life away on it? studio pixel is about 20 years late with the gameplay and graphics. i mean, this could have come out on the nes. come on now.
I should have been more specific in my previous post. What I mean is that this is good:
While this is not:
"With the kind cooperation"? Can you imagine the text "With the kind cooperation of the Federation forces, all of your bases now belong to us." being used all over the signs and buildings and vehicles and even advertisments and repeated by literally millions of people with almost religious admiration? Neither do I. But sadly, this is how Japanese-English translation looks today, and Doukutsu Monogatari is no different. Sad. Very sad. Where are the old translators with just the right balance between the sense of humour and--let's face it--brilliance? Are there any new games with similar narrative style as the original version of Zero Wing? Will there ever be?
Sincerely,
Pan Tarhei Hosé, PhD.
"Homo sum et cogito ergo odi profanum vulgus et libido."
A game without fancy 3d graphics, where the player's skill and imagination are key? I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
comparable to commercial games in length and depth.
does that mean it 4 hours long, no real character development, and buggy as hell . . . ?
Anyone tried?
Analogies don't equal equalities, they are merely somewhat analogous.
Far be it from me to judge a book by its cover but judge I will. The graphics are not all bad, some of it seems really good, but is this really a "platformer"? Some of it looks like an RPG with lists of items you have and occasional reminders of the Zelda series on the NES/Famicom.
Anyone play it yet? Is it too RPGish or are we looking at a regular "fun" platformer without tedious RPG elements?
Small potatoes make the steak look bigger.
I wear a black bastedo, black bastedo, black black black (o my god!) http://bastedo.urbanup.com/1030903 This joystick is hot!!
I saw a couple of friends playing this the other day, but the fuckers did shit all to explain what it was and where they got it from.
So thanks, Slashdot.

Although on the surface, I see little to be too excited about, there are some awesome awesome freeware games around, that can take up more of your time than HL2.
I do see the OS gaming catching up with studios, because, by its nature, you can build, recycle, and team up, and make some awesome things.
I wish that game (which I forgot the name of) written in Java (you can find a link on the java.net site) which has key movement and mouse fire, top down maze thingy, was open sourced. It has a great platform for about 6 different games to spawn from the code base.
I am putting together my own 3d based pointy clicky engine... it is slow in coming around, jogl and xith3d no doubt. west side.

I mean, "Doukutsu Monogatari" is just two words. Buy a dictionary, people!
~~~~~ BigLig2? You mean there's another one of me?
I've been struggling through the previous version, untranslated, for the past month.
looks good, but the keyboard layout is problematic
It only allows the y and z keys for jump and fire, and those keys are very uncomfortable to press with on hand on a german keyboard.
changing the keyboard layout under windows has no effect on the game.
has anyone found out a way to change that?
how do you get past the egg area? i went into eggs 6 and 1, now what?
I think it's great. It's got the best aspects of Castlevania and Metroid in there along with an interesting way to power-up your various weapons. Controls haven't been an issue for me as it recognized and mapped my Gravis Gamepad Pro automagically. This game is seriously fun, deep, and addictive. What more could you ask for?
Hey let's make it in 3D and TOTALLY ruin it! No thanks.
swanker than you
Here is the link to the Mac version of the game.
Creative Demolition
I've played most of the top freeware games and this game is definitely one of the best. I'm a few hours in and am thoroughly impressed so far. Its an action platform game sort of like Metroid. There are even some innovations like the way weapon upgrading/downgrading works. Great graphics, fun homage to 2d tile engine. One techincal thing that impresses me is they dont use any alpha blending, but it still looks great. Also, I recommend using a game pad if you have one.
Deus Ex 2 was only 2 hours long you insensitive clod!
(I recall reading some guy finishing it in just under an hour, I don't know how, I personally beat it in 2).
Hack your mind out of its sandbox.
Try this game too: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA022293/FreeSoft/I kachan.html
It's similar to Doukutsu Monogatari, with a very fun gravity based gameplay, you can only rotate and propel yourself.
It would be great if they translated this too.
This is the best game I've played all year.
Granted, 2005 is pretty short so far, but that does include Halo 2.
