To sum it up, there is hardly any noticable difference between XP RME and XP Pro, except for the welcome screen and Windows not recognizing their own file format. The article hints how this may be the beggining to a Windows OS without any Microsoft applications. Bye-bye Internet Explorer?"

Microsoft's practices are a bit shady (like trying to name a product 'reduced media edition'
Not shady, downright contemptible. When the courts punish them they act like some immature little kid, not a global corporation.
They think they're above the law, but what they don't realize is that this kind of behavior doesn't sit well with people. They are only hastening their descent into irrelevance. Keep up the good work, assholes.
