Midway to Create Adult Swim Titles

Midway Games will be coordinating with Cartoon Network to create titles based on the Adult Swim block of shows, Voodoo Extreme reports. The shows up for conversion include Harvey Birdman, The Brak Show, and Sealab 2021. From the article: "ADULT SWIM is a phenomenon with young adult viewers who identify with the edgy, irreverent tone of the shows and the block...Clearly, lots of ADULT SWIM fans are avid gamers, and we look forward to working with Midway to make games the fans will love."

    One can't even imagine what manner of gameplay these shows will inspire. Half the time they don't make any sense yet are hilarious. I'm looking forward to losing my mind trying to figure these games out.

      I love watching Adult Swim...though I dont have the luxury these days becuase of work and school. It would look promising to bring a game version of it. If not for the gameplay but just to see and interact with your favorite characters in Adult Swim. Love to play MeatWad and Shake!

      I could very easily see some old-style Adventure games coming out of this. If I recall, they made a Beavis and Butthead adventure game for the PC, which met with good reviews.

      I can't wait for that game either. I'm sure UT2K4's Redeemer will have nothing on the Quad Laser. I hear it will amaze ya.

      p.s. if the ATHF game was based on that insult game it would would be really cool, but I'd have thought that making something resembling-but-legally-distinct-from Gish, with Meatwad as the star, would be pretty likely too.

      Cause we are the Aqua Teens! Gotta love a game where you can pick up and throw practically anything and it explodes on the ground.

      I think ATHF would make a great platformer, you have three unique characters to play and lots of enemies. Maybe it could be like GTA and you could drive the "Danger Car" around town on missions. They are detectives after all :)

    So they're going to create games based on a show that was canceled over a year ago? And will they have old Mom or new Mom for the voice?

    I loved the Brak Show. It would be nice to think that a video game company expressing interest in it might help to bring it back, but I'm not holding my breath. Most likely, they have some idea that will incorporate characters from a bunch of the different shows.

      It was called "Headkicker." I always wanted to play that game.

    Sealab, OTOH, could make a great old school adventure game.

    Aqua Teen should be an extremly bloody fps in which you quest to become MOONMASTER!!!!

    But video games are. They may borrow the characters, but I doubt they will feature much more than amusing quips - witness "Simpsons: Hit and Run."

      Which is, by the way, the best representation of the Simpsons universe to date.
      The little quips do get annoying, but the gameplay is solid for once.
      They essentually borrowed the GTA game engine/formula and skinned it with the Simpsons.

      While "Hit and Run" was well recieved, the list of horrible Simpson themed games is way too long...
      The Simpsons: Skateboarding (lowest rating on any game ever in Game Informer. It scored a -1-.)

      The Simpsons: Road Rage (Crazy Taxi reskinned)
      The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants

      ...and I'm sure that there are more...These are just from memory!

      I forgot to mention the Road Rage. It was actually a very fun game and probably better than Crazy Taxi. I enjoyed it tremendously.

      It's true i mean neither Monkey Island or Sam and Max were funny... Oh wait, yes they were. As was the Discworld game (only played the first one). I know these were all point and click adventures but it shows it can be done.

    Ok, I read the blurb on Slashdot and I was more than skeptical. Another lame platform game grafted onto funny cartoon characters? *sigh* But a voice inside me said, you know it might not be that bad...

    You know, considering the fact that most if not all of the adult swim shows could be done in Flash and noone would be any the wiser, I wonder what the graphics on these upcoming games will be... Hopefully they'll stick to 2D... Actually, I think a 3D game with well-animated, high-resolution 2D sprites could be very enjoyable.

      Agreed, Venture Bros. is brilliant and needs -- NEEDS! -- all the publicity it can get.

      The other Adult Swim shows, however...

      Okay, I'm probably going to get modded down for this. But I really don't like Sealab or Harvey Birdman. Brak Show was okay, I thought it was the best of the four AS originals (though Cartoon Planet was better). Aqua Teen isn't bad, but seems to be getting worse. The thing is, most of the (non-anime) Adult Swim shows have an absurdist structure that wears thin fast, and the shows have only been getting more absurd over time.

      (Also, is it just me, or do the people editing Harvey Birdman have no sense of comic timing at all?)

    What they don't mention is that also Midway picked up the rights to other Cartoon Network shows such as Ed, Edd and Eddie. Basically this was just a grab-up on Midway's part, and they will probably make horrible games for each and every one they grabbed. Just imagine: Aqua Teen Hunger Force Cart Racing!

    Sealab will be a classic point-and-click adventure game.
    Aqua Teens will be a Space Invaders ripoff (the moonians are the only good thing from that show anyway)
    Harvey Birdman will play out like a Japanese "visual novel" or dating sim (minus the dating)
    Brak will be something along the lines of the old Monty Python game (not Holy Grail, the other, totally irreverent one)
    Venture Bros. will be a platformer

    I think I covered all the non-anime shows.

    Seriously. Sam and Max was a comic book with a relatively similar mix of humor and bizarre realities, and lucas arts made a fantastic adventure game out of it so many years back.

    It's the perfect gametype for something like this, because it can be tightly scripted to allow for good writers to fill it with humor, but at the same time, it's very interactive, and requires experimentation and imagination. And all the stuff that doesn't work usually at least invokes an amusing quote or something.

    Didn't Midway do the Southpark games for N64/Dreamcast/PSX whatever? If I recall correctly they all pretty muched majoryly sucked and the Southpark creator guys hated the games and said they had no control over their creation.

    ...those shows don't really lend themselves to video games as much as most every other Cartoon Network license does...

    I can see a "Dexter's Laboratory Game" wherein Dexter must do battle with Mandark(sp?) and keep his sister from his lab.

    I can see a 'Big O' or 'Megas XLR' based giant robot fighting games.

    Teen Titans, Justice League and the Power Puff Girls lend themselves to an action/adventure platform type game.

    The Adult Swim shows? Nope, not when some of the most funny parts is when a character sits in one place, the scene appears to pause and all you see for something like 5 to 30 seconds is the character's eyes scooting back and forth, with an occasional 'Er.. uh..' noise being issued from the character.

    I never understood the "Swim" part of this. What's an adult swim? Is it relating to skinny-dipping? What's this got to do with cartoons? I just don't get it.

      Adult Swim is something that happen(s/ed) every summer at almost every municipal pool across this country (well, the south, I don't know what happens outside of here). Basically, during Adult Swim, all kids are out of the pool. It generally last(s/ed) an hour or so (I don't know if they still do it or not, as the last municipal thing I've visited was either a court house or a golf course). It allowed the grown up folk to swim freely without having to worry about all the little splashy bastards getting water in their hair and ruining their makeup.

      So, taking the name Adult Swim for a cartoon block that is solely intended for being viewed by those of a more mature nature seemed very fitting, indeed. Of course, if you only started watching this after they switched to the witty text bumps and ambient music, then you would've missed out on all of the old legitimate references to where the name was taken from the beginnings of the block (lifeguard voice, old people in swim caps, constantly saying things like "alright, all kids..out of the pool!," "I thought I said no eating in the pool, sir," and "No cannonballs!").

      I hope this explains it to you a little better.

    There is, to my mind, only one Adult Swim show that lends itself to the video game medium: Venture Brothers. There are villians with legitimate empires (as opposed to those on ATHF, which have mainly delusions of granduer). There is action (as opposed to Sealab which has primarily wacky adventures). There is intrigue (as opposed to Tom Goes to the Mayor, which mostly sucks on every level).

    Even then, I don't see how any of these shows, VB included, would make a worthwhile game...but hey, I'm still playing NWN every day. What do I know?
