FFXI No Longer Playable on PS2

Via Final Fantasy Online: Warcry, a link to the official FFXI site stating that starting on May 1st PS2 service will be withdrawn. Playstation 2 players will no longer be able to access the Square-Enix title, as according to the site: "The limitation of the Playstation 2 has restricted and held back certain developments to the game and its continued support would make future updates and content limited." Update: 04/02 18:02 GMT by Z : April 1st hoax story.

      Who knows - if Immersion gets its way, there really might not be any more PS2 FFXI players - in the US, at least. It uses force feedback too. Players can use in the chat channel to piss off other players by making loud noises and making the controller vibrate. Plus certain spells make the controller vibrate in a way that definitely violates the patent.

      So it may not be an April Fools joke forever...

      You've got that backwards. Usually it's some story completely unrelated to FFXI, and some Square-Anus will come in talking about how Square-Penix did everything so perfectly in FFXI, blah blah blah.

      Then everyone else will point out how much FFXI actually sucks (enough that Sony canceled the hard drive it came on, since demand was so low), and then - flame war.

      Remove the Square-Anuses, and there'll be no more flamewars.

    Anyone else think it may be a poor choice to have the JavaScript popup as the punchline to this "April Fools" joke? Handheld browsers may not display it. Possibly IE users with high security settings won't see it. And some Firefox users that are paranoid won't. Not to mention the rest of the population that automatically close anything that pops up automatically... I would understand if there's a huge uprising because of that.

    Am I the only one who thinks that Slashdot is really stupid on April Fool's Day? I think every story I've seen on this site today is a hoax ... c'mon editors put some real shit up there ...

      That's what it's for. April Fool's is a time for every website in the known universe to go nuts. Slashdot is like a big directory for them. I rather enjoy it myself.

      exactly they can only use the old version of the PS2, this actually caused a big tissy with SE and Sony since SE got really pissed off at Sony for doing this without notice.

      Interestingly enough, Sony is now working with SE to make something they will allow you to play FFXI on the new PS2.

      regardless of which this had to be the worst April Fools joke yet. Slashdot really is sucking wind this year.

      I hear that Sony is working on a top secret project. Its like a harddrive....

      But it works outside of a machine.

      Yes, I know its hard to believe, but it's true, I've seen the prototypes. They have this thing called "oozb" that connects the drive to the computer... Uhoh, I've said too much. I better go before they geJAK#%!@%NO CARRIER

      very funny but the HD its self isnt the problem the connection is. slim only has usb1 like the original but without the firewire connector the original had so just a HD isnt the problem its how do you connect it

    You can't play FFXI on the new PS2 minis, which makes this a bad April Fools joke when you think about it. If you listened to the community when Sony announced the PS2 mini you would've heard talk of people hoarding the old PS2 models due to their unreliability/the fact that the only other way to play would be on the PC. Among the PC players, theres random rumors/jokes/talk about the game eventually becoming PC only after the next expansion (if there is another expansion considering how late it is in the PS2's life).

    Too bad it's an April Fools joke. The PS2 users are a blight on the game.
