Preview of New Games at E3 2005
Joystiq (once again answering my hailing frequencies) has up a preview of some of the new titles that will be seeing the light of day at this year's e3. A smattering of some of the games: "The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, D&D Online, UFO: Aftershock, Battlefield 2, Black and White 2, The Sims 2: Nightlife, Guild Wars, Metroid Prime Hunters, Shadow the Hedgehog, Destroy All Humans" This year we're going to have an E3 topic for your browsing convenience.
I can recall playing a game as a kid which was I think was called Evolution. You started out as an amoeba and worked up the evolutionary ladder through a series of action oriented stages.
I can't recall all the stages, but there was a beaver one which had you building a dam. The last stage was human of course. I believe you battled against evil robots.
When you cleared the final human stage, there was a big explosion wiping out most life on Earth. And of course you started all over again, as a lowly amoeba.
Sometimes my arms bend back.
said it all: "2004 was truly a banner year ... how many years can we have that contain UT2004, Doom 3, Painkiller, and Half-Life 2?" (here)
... It's hard to expect anything even close to 2004's precedent again. I'll probably be recycling 2004 for a long, long time.
Not to mention LOTR: Battle for Middle-earth, Katamari Damacy, Prince of Persia
VG Cats did a great strip about this recently.
Worth the read, if for no other reason than to watch Sonic cry.
And because they're sort of relevant and funny, their strip about Black and White, Metroid, and Zelda.
The ______ Agenda
SAILING MISHAP
Now, I am not saying everyone will agree with my assessment, but you can be dead sure dat almost nobody likes all these game types. Now, why would you play a game that consists of six different game types, four of which you don't like? And knowing Will Wright's record, he will fuck up at least five of the six game types.
Will Wright's latest games have, in general, got reviews (which I agree with) that said: "Brilliant game in places, but overall not that good." It seems with Spore Will is trying to make sure he'll get another of those reviews. It probably can't miss.
So, no, I am not looking forward to this.
Spore is not yet even officially a game. What Will showed was a tech demo, demonstrating what he believes could be the future of game design, and a way of keeping costs managable instead of having them spiral to the heights of the biggest hollywood films.
Unless i have simply missed something, Spore is still only a tech demo. Considering the style of coding it was done it, i would be very interested to find out how big the tech demo was. Ive seen the 64k demos, and what they pack in there is amazing.
I don't think sub-subsections are likely to be seen any time soon. As far as I know the current sectional setup is going to be the paradigm going forward, with more sections (like the recently added hardware) being released in the future. It also seems somewhat confusing. Trees are fun to climb in real life, but I'm not that big a fan when it comes to web interfaces.
:)
As for the content of Slashdot Games, I think it gets plenty of attention.
The goal for the games section has never been to be like Evil Avatar or Shacknews, both of who are great resources for every review, preview, and feature you might be interested in. You and I don't need help to find a review for a game that we're interested in. My hope is that the games section provides access to stories you might not otherwise come across, or provides an angle to make a story intersting that you might not have otherwise enjoyed.
