Linux Can't Kill Windows

nberardi writes "Infoworld is running an article in which the author claims 'Linux is established and has a niche that, as various pendulums swing, will grow and shrink. Show me charts and stats and benchmarks that prove Linux superior to Windows in every measure and I'll not argue with you. But no matter how much money and dedication is poured into Linux, it will never put a dent in Windows' mind share or market share because Linux is an operating system, a way -- and probably the best way -- to make system hardware do what it's told. But you can't turn Linux into a platform even if you brand it, box it, and put a pricey sticker on it.'"

Is there anything more bloated and slow? This p4 loads firefox in about 2 seconds yet most Java apps still bring it to its knees without even doing anything special! It's truly incredible.

I installed my first copy of Linux just the other day (Fedora) onto my Sony laptop, after trying Mandrake and Debian with no luck. I've been using windows for years, and would consider myself a fairly advanced user compared to the average, but it took me no less then 12 hours of fiddling to get to the KDE desktop. If the Linux community wants to see Linux become mainstream, they need to focus on usability, instead of security. It's what Microsoft has done. If my 80 year old grandmother who's never touched a computer can jump into Windows XP and start emailing, Microsoft has done their job. Sure my grandmother's computer will be hacked in microseconds, but she'll never know the difference. That kind of ease of use is what allows Microsoft to keep their edge. On the other hand, I need to get over to some Linux forum to find out how to install the sonypi drivers, since double clicking an .rpm doesn't do anything. For some reason, I expected it to behave like a .exe.

Face it, Java is bloated and horribly slow. Why anyone would support a language that is taking steps backwards in performance terms, despite ever faster hardware, is beyond me.

The sooner Java gets scrapped, the better. I loved my first intro to Java at school. Every lecture was the same "Remember how you did it in C++, well it is the same in Java, except that it can't be done in a single line of code, you need 5 lines instead. Oh, and it isn't as fast.". More code, less speed, and an API that is WAY to bloated. And my favorite, write once, run somewhere. Cross platform my ass. My C code runs better cross platform than Java does, and C isn't designed to have that as a feature.

    Java Sucks.

Yeah, a moving platform. With countless widget sets, multiple clipboards, different directory structures, an infinite number of combinations and permutations of shared libraries, and just as many sources of outdated, incorrect, misleading or utterly superb documentation, and crap vendors like Redhat which drop version support in a third the time of Microsoft.

This is as opposed to the superb stability and compatibility one gets between OS versions from Redmond. Take Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 2, for example; anything which runs on one runs on the other, right?

I really could give a flying fuck about Windows. I use Linux, I like it better for what I do. As long as I can keep using it, and it keeps improving, I don't care if it "takes over the desktop" or not. If "taking over the desktop" means that the mass population of the US uses it, then I sure don't want that to happen. Because the American Public is, collectively, stupid. We fall for Nigerian scams, watch NASCAR, sit our fat asses in front of the TV for half of our day, eat fast food, watch American Idol, and vote a complete moron into the highest office.

I don't want Linux to take over the desktop, and I am not sure why anyone else does either.
