New Gunstar Heros For GBA

Neitokun writes "1up.com is reporting that there is going to be a Sequel to Gunstar Heros for the Gameboy Advance. Called Gunstar Super Heros, game appears close to the action-y style of the original. The production company, Treasure, appears to be concerned more about quality than just making a sale-worthy game. From the article: 'We're not going to make a sequel just because it would sell. That would be a disaster.'"

They apparently didn't apply that line of thought to the recently released Advance Guardian Heroes sequel to Guardian Heroes that came out for GBA last year.

I got the "Congratulations" screen for beating the game after 3-4 hours of gameplay and promptly mouthed the words "What the fuck".

Folks, this just isn't the same Treasure we all used to know and love.

Didn't they also do last year's critically acclaimed GBA Astro Boy: Omega Factor? I really liked it. The second time through (to get the real ending) is significantly harder... I think; at least one of the bosses is. I haven't played it in a little while.

I'm looking forward to Gunstar Heroes, though. I played the Genesis game once, and it had the bizarre and hectic feel that Bangai-O can have, only constant and faster. This seems great for the GBA.

Treasure is an independent development studio that works under game-by-game contracts with various publishers -- they don't have a marketing department, and they only sign the contract to make a game if they honestly think they can do something worthwhile through the game.

That's not to say that everything they do is perfect -- they have a few flops to their name -- but one can say that Treasure's games are always interesting, even in their failures.

From what I remember, the GBA platform was described by Nintendo as being more or less equivalently capable as that of the SNES, so that actually makes a lot of sense. I haven't heard that it's significantly more powerful, but if we had more games that look like GSH, maybe it'd be obvious :)

Gunstar Heroes is like Contra or Metal Slug on serious crack. It offers some great special moves that differ between the two characters that it's still probably the best game in the genre (and I've played the PS import games that are eerily similar...they merely come close, but they can't beat this game).

Anyone who's ever liked a game in this genre should be leaping for joy about this GBA sequel.

It had an interesting way of dealing with player weapons, and the action was top notch. Though a bit shorter, not even Contra (the clostest in design) could compete with the action.

This game is a classic. It has fast-paced shooting action where enemies are coming from everywhere around you. The weapon system works by combining weapons, for example if you get homing+flame you get a flameball that you can control at your will. The weapon upgrades come up with short intervals so you can switch and test out your weapons at will. You can have two weapons at the time which are either combined or used separately. These sections of the game are excellent, but what makes it more special? The game has a LOT of special stages and bosses. Every level has at least one boss sequence and then there is the little dice game level where there are if i remember correct at least 10 different boss fights depending how you roll the dice. Then of course you got the mines level where you are on a cart driving forward and can switch between the floor and the ceiling and a small ingame space-shooter aka. R-Type.

This has been the best arcade-beat/shoot'em'up game for me since i first got it for the Mega Drive (Genesis). I encourage you to try it out, if you like the genre then i'm sure you'll love this game. I do.

I also wonder how they would pull off multiplayer with such a small screen; would it be free ranging for both player? Or possibly four players? I can only say, I can't wait.

They did. "Advance Guardian Heroes" came out last fall for the GBA, but was met with mediocre reviews. It's now pretty cheap; I actually got it a week ago and my experience thus far is that while the game has potential, it's held back by its bad translation and a b0rked save system, both of which magnify the issues it already has with a messed-up learning curve and sub-standard in-game training/tutorials.

Advance Guardian Heroes release last fall was over-shadowed by the similarly-timed North American release of another Treasure GBA brawler, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, which is frankly a far better game (that is to say, it is a very good game, and close enough in overall style and gameplay to act somewhat as a substitute). Knowledge of Astro Boy's various stories in animation and comics over the years may improve your appreciation of the game, but I can tell you from experience that it is not needed to enjoy it; the game stands on its own. (Although, for those who are curious about how the game's story relates to existing material, the game actually includes something of a small, gradually-unlocked encyclopedia on Astro Boy and related works also by the late Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka.)
