Which is Better, Firefox or Opera?

Roblimo writes "Firefox and Opera are the two most popular cross-platform Web browsers. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Kris Shaffer tested them side-by-side on SUSE Linux 9.1, Mac OS X Panther, and Windows 2000, and decided that your choice may depend more on what you *do* with your browser than anything else, unless (as is the case for many of us) Opera is off the table from the start because it's not open source."

Secondly, open source is better than closed source since you can get rid of things you don't like (like ads) easier with open software. Although something being closed source may not be enough reason not to use it, it's definantly enough to weigh a comparison in favour of an open product.

Hopefully us peons who use Opera, will someday switch to Firefox and then we can walk with our backs straight and look down our noses to the other peons who uses Opera...

I mean really, I don't use explorer cause it does suck, I like opera because it IS faster than Explorer and Firefox...

To discount Opera just because it is closed source (but you can still get a free version) just shows the attitude that drives most of slashdot. Our way or the highway...

The Gay Nigger Association of America, also known as the GNAA, is a self-aggrandizing Internet troll organization that primarily targets Internet communities in an effort to disrupt their normal activities and annoy their users. Members have flooded weblogs, produced shock sites, prank-called technical support telephone lines, and flooded, mass-invited, and trolled IRC chat rooms. As a consequence, the communities that are attacked treat GNAA members as nuisances and frequently respond with technological and social anti-trolling measures (such as comment moderation) to limit future disruption caused by trolling.

    Background information

The group originated on the Slashdot website. It claims to consist of six leaders and approximately 30 to 40 other members. GNAA first appeared in January 2003, trolling Slashdot using ASCII art logos representing the organization and satirical news releases pertaining to the contents of Slashdot articles. They also have their own IRC server, which is connected to "NiggerNET" reachable by irc.gnaa.us. The main GNAA channel is #gnaa.

The GNAA website states: "We do not support and do not promote racism, homophobia, etc." [1] (http://www.gnaa.us/about.phtml)
    [edit]

    Membership

GNAA encourages people to join by watching the 1992 Danish low-budget movie Gayniggers From Outer Space, from which their name derives. The GNAA's entry requirements also include successfully achieving a "first post" on Slashdot consisting of GNAA Internet troll text, or registering support by upwardly moderating GNAA comments. A test on the subject matter in Gayniggers From Outer Space is then administered by an IRC bot.

The GNAA has a signature which their members use whenever they perform a crapflood or post a news release. The full "sig", which includes an embedded ASCII art picture of the letters "GNAA" on a wall, can be found on their website. It begins:

GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) is the first organization which gathers GAY NIGGERS
from all over America and abroad for one common goal - being GAY NIGGERS.

    Are you GAY?
    Are you a NIGGER?
    Are you a GAY NIGGER?

If you answered "Yes" to all of the above questions, then GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF
AMERICA) might be exactly what you've been looking for! [2] (http://www.gnaa.us/about.phtml)

    [edit]

    Activities

GNAA gained notoriety in the Slashdot community when they launched several flood attacks against the site. [3] (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=100374&thresh old=-1) [4] (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=100381&thresh old=-1) Slashdot subsequently implemented open proxy-banning measures in its posting system; GNAA members claim that their crapflooding campaign spurred this change. They registered thousands of usernames en masse to mark Slashdot editor "michael" as their foe. [5] (http://slashdot.org/~michael/freaks)

During May 2004, GNAA members flooded the popular image board 4chan, contributing to the fourth non-permanent shutdown of the site shortly thereafter. In the list of reasons why it closed down, the administrator wrote: "Flooding. GNAA put the final nail in the coffin, however I am thankful that they willingly ceased the flood after finding out it was costing me money." [6] (http://www.4chan.org/index3.php) However, a poster on the Something Awful Forums later stated that this was only one of several factors that caused them to be shut down: "It was not the GNAA who killed 4chan (I quite like

Firefox is a dog on every machine I've tried it on. I do have a wide range of older hardware and on even the 1Ghz machines it's unusable. I am told that FF is fast enough by people who claim to be using 350MHz machines but on my 400MHz there is a pause of a second or more after picking a menu option before anything happens. After about ten minutes of that FF gets dumped.

I have no idea why FF is so slow, but until it's not, Opera remains the only non-open-source app on my machine. Actually, FF is pretty ugly too, so it would have to be a lot better than Opera before I'd switch.

Yes I have. I've used both firefox and IE, and I must say that IE renders pages correct every single time, whereas with firefox I often have to refresh the page just to make everything appear properly. Speedwise, I say they are the same. I have not noticed any difference in either's page load times. Now IE may be attacked by phishers and spam junkies all the time, but that is only because of its huge market share. If FF continues to grow in useage, it is obvious that its faults will be exploited more. And with it being open source, the wierdoes that go around doing this sort of thing will find it far easier to create exploits for FF than they do now for IE. Maybe this post will be rate -1 because it's pro MS, but quite frankly, I don't care. There's nothing wrong in pointing out facts. FF can be a lot more weak than IE.
