Apple Switching to Intel
Steve Jobs announced at the WWDC keynote today that Apple is switching to Intel processors. MacNN has live coverage. The bottom line is that Mac OS X for the last five years has been running on Intel, the switch is expected to be complete in two years, and Rosetta will allow PPC apps to run on Intel-based Macs, transparently. If you're using Xcode, it is small changes and a recompile; otherwise, you might be seeing a lot of work ahead of you. You will be able to order the 10.4.1 preview for Intel today.

San Francisco, California - Just three days after being the first in the world to leak photos of Apple's upcoming revision to MacOS X, version 10.4, Steve Jobs announced to the world facts about the new Operating System consistent with information leaked by elite GNAA operator Gary Niger and prospective member Ron Delsner.
"We've pulled it off!", noted Niger during Jobs' announcement at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. "The GNAA plan was clever from the start with this one I think. When we received our leaked copy of the OS, we knew that by releasing only partial information and some screenshots, the association people would make with the GNAA would lead them to believe the screenshots were fake. Now that Steve 'Rim' Jobs has verified everything we leaked, we have managed to fool the entire Mac community. In essense, a few hundred thousand people have been trolled, a few hundred thousand people have lost. Though I do wish they have a nice day"
"I don't think it could have worked out any better; Every single one of the features shown in our screenshots, particularly Dashboard, which everybody called as fake, was demoed by Jobs. This is my revenge for being beat up on the rent", quoted Ron Delsner on being approached by reporters. "I've been wanting to join the Gay Nigger Association of America for quite some time, and knew that I help pull off something big if they were to let me in."
Delsner was right, as upon hearing this, Gary Niger immediately produced a vial of what he called the "Holy Gay Nigger Seed" from his front pocket, and asked Ron to kneel, at which time the Seed was poured upon Ron's head, making him an official member of the GNAA. Noticing the television cameras present in the press room, Gary cited that this was in fact the first televised induction of a member into the GNAA.
"But back to the troll", Niger said quickly after. "I had a sneaking suspicion that the homosexual caucasians of the Mac community would feel threatened by the GNAA's massive nigger cocks and immediately cast doubts upon any screenshots we produced for them. I saw this as an opportunity to troll hundreds of thousands of people. It just goes to show that GNAA is greater than j00, and that fristage postage is mine."

Steve Jobs was unavailable for comment immediately following the keynote address, though WWDC attendee and GNAA member Porfa noticed "A cute wiggle in Jobs' ass as he walked away."

London, England -- GNAA's UK division has reported that five unnamed jews who abused LastMeasure links at their school in a total failure of a fashion were today taken away for interrogation by the government's National High Tech Crime Unit. The accused created shitty batch files in a rucas-esque attempt to flood the schools' computer systems with LastMeasure URL's.
After a filled computer class was exposed to LastMeasure for more than five minutes, a N.H.T.C.U. team raided the computer lab and abducted the culprits. One managed to escape the clutches of the government after being taken to a detention centre and fled to the GNAA UK headquarters in London. According to an interview with the escapee, they were taken away to an unknown location and locked in a cell. One by one, they were taken and tortured for hours on end with spiky anal dildos and analpears. Heading up the torture was none other then the notorious Kirk Johnson, also known by his nickname "The Goatse Man".
"It was absolutely horrible! My asshole is now ruined for life. The things they were doing to us were unhuman. This news has shocked the GNAA community. Many were in disbelief that LastMeasure had any child porn what so ever. According to our inside nigger agent in the N.H.T.C.U. the image file "eww.jpg" was found to be of a "paedophilic" nature. dcom of the GNAA's UK branch was found saying "wtf, thats child porn? I masturbate to that picture evey day and I'm no paedophile!" We believe this to be an unjust attack against the GNAA's premiere software product, and yet another attempt by the Zionists rooted deep within the British Government to destroy the world's greatest trolling organisation.
We will not waive on our stance that LastMeasure is 100% legal. By far the most powerful crash was the "last measure" crash, which would inundate an AIM client with file transfer requests, buddy list sends, messages full of smileys and colors, until the AIM client crashed due to lack of RAM.

The irony is just too rich
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.
Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
This means NO MORE NEW SOFTWARE for you. No Mac OS X, no iLife, no Final Cut Express, no Photoshop. You will _maybe_ get another version or so and after that you're S.O.L.
This sucks so hard, it's unbelievable. Expect a flood of cheap Macs on ebay in the coming weeks.
I hate intel chips and won't buy anything even if it is an apple product. Way to screw things up Jobs. Well the dream is over. Looks like I will be using my mac mini for many years to come. I don't understand. Why go with a dying processor line at the end of its life cycle. There are better chips and manufacturers out there. This was an amazingly stupid move by Jobs. IMO Apple will be dead within 5 years.
Maybe this is how Steveo kept hollywood off his back about the iPod, "Don't worry, we will support full DRM even before Microsoft."
But actually this is pretty cool. I'm just imagining an XServer on an Intel monster...and all of the Wintel fanboys who crow about the processor speed of their latest Fry's homebrewed beast. Now one more reason not to switch to a Mac has bit the dust. Can't wait to get a Mactel box and dual boot Linux on it. Schweet.

It *IS* a better technology.
Altivec is far more advanced than anything Intel could deliver.
The fact is, IBM and Motorolla want to deal with the heavy lifters that do massive parallel processing but have no real need for speed, or embeded devices that they can sell far more than what Apple needs, and these generally need stability and not upgrades.
Intel is focused on raw speed...all in all, I hope Apple was able to leverage their interest in the Altivec core over to Intel. I do use Windows a lot, so this would work out for me either way...get rid of SSE2 and bring on the iTanium: Altivec Edition.

All you poor Apple snobs, all that fanfare only to see Apple become just another OS for the Intel Platform.
Now you get to see all the Windows and Linux driver problems for Apple, but worse. You see, unlike Microsoft and Linux hackers, Apple doesn't have any real experience with maintaining a stable of drivers for vastly differing hardware. The motherboard mambo will soon mean all my wife's ranting about Apple "just working" will soon come to an end.
They'll be just another Wintel OS, but crippled by fewer applications and one less mouse button.

I think he meant to say "we are going to do it to you now, and to our customers in the next year.

The thing no one is talking about is that Mac os X is now a containder to the OS hill again. Why use Windows when Mac OS X is so much better ? I know I know legacies... But i believe having a OS X on intel is far more dangerous for Microsoft than linux. (Sorry for the Linux fan I offended)
It's an ideological shift because for years the Mac Zealots have pulled the Apple line about why the PPC is superior to x86. Now they are forced to admit that PPC was a mistake.
Jobs is famous for his ego so I admire his willingness to own up to this instead of continuing to stubbornly push the PPC.
Further the hardware will remain proprietary, to ensure customers have to buy their sucky computers from Apple to continue doing what they did just fine before.

Perhaps the Mac crowd will become the ultimate DRM apologists, claiming, with some credibility, that Mac couldn't survive if it didn't have TC/DRM involved.
Prior to iTunes and the iTunes store, almost every poster here agreed that DRM is pure dag nasty evil period, end of story, will boycott any vendor, etc. Once a few of us toked on the iTunes crack pipe, DRM suddenly became okay for quite a few people here. "Oooooooooohh shiney!". "This is reasonable DRM.... Don't beat up on Apple or the DRM will get even worse...." etc. etc. ad nauseatingly.
It all goes to show that the Reality Distortion Field is working just peachy. You're probably correct that we are about to see a lot more Apple inspired DRM apologists.
Using DRM for such is largely unnecessary anyway. Look at how long it takes for Linux and the BSDs to get drivers sometimes. Apple is only going to support their chipsets and will probably go after anyone who starts running "Darwin Driver" projects that let OS X out of the Apple cage.
Intel wins by public perception they are the de facto PC processor, but AMD must be smiling. There's no reason Apple can't just add or even switch to AMD processors when convienent.
Apple is starting its own life struggle, naked arm wrestling with Microsoft for control of Intel-based PCs.
I look for Apple to initially put in some proprietary hardware that their OS will detect and use at boot/runtime. This will make their hardware look "better" than vanilla PC hardware, but also make their software run on same vanilla PC hardware.
I suspect migration of Windows PCs to Apple OS will be downplayed for the first year, then in 2008 expect "compatibility kits" to be offered by Apple, free if you buy/have bought an OS license from them.
For its part, Microsoft will start sabotaging its implementation of Apple protocols and destroy interoperability between Windows and Mac platforms.
Intel smiles now, but this is another kick in the groin for their 64-bit processor. Another industry leader is moving to 32-bit x86. Don't expect another processor architecture shift from Apple anytime soon.
AMD laughs on the sidelines, expect Apple servers with AMD processors in 2008.
Windows 3.5 and 4.0 ran on PPC, MIPS and Alpha platforms in addition to x86 hardware. MS only discontinued those flavors because there just wasn't much of a market for those systems. Windows is plenty flexible enough to move to another 'non-standard' platform.
