Screw AT&T and all the other so-called bandwidth providers if they think I'm going to fork over any more money then I am currently paying.
Ya see, here in the Great White (as in snow) North Canada, I pay a premium price for unlimited downloads. Regular and basic plans have capped monthly limits.
I just can't see how the US government or more importantly the rest of the planet would allow these modern day robber barrons to create this tiered system. That would be like my cable company charging me $10 a month because I watched 100 more reruns last month.
And speaking of my cable company, how would local telcos charge for this "extra" bandwidth? Their pipe isn't going to get any bigger so its not a quantity issue or are they simply going to be tollgates for "priority traffic". Which is probably the case which means its NOT a bandwidth issue, its a money grab.
I think its rather timely that the $200 Billion Broadband Scandel is being released.
$200 Billion Dollar Broadband Scandal, is a powerful critique that outlines a truly massive case of fraud. The Bell Companies (Verizon, SBC, Qwest, and BellSouth) used trickery and deceit to swindle the U.S. out of a promised 45mbps internet connection. They collected billions of dollars in regulatory fees, and now they are attempting to commoditize the Internet. Kushnick's book uses stunning detail to expose this treachery with accuracy and thoroughness.
Bill C-60: Internet service providers have also done very well. They obtain clear provisions that they are not liable for caching or other hosting of third party content. Further, there is the notice and notice system, which obligates ISPs to send a notice if there is a claim of copyright infringement and retain "records that will allow the identity of the person to whom the electronic location belongs to be determined" but they are permitted to charge for the service (the government will set the maximum fee). ISPs that fail to abide by these provisions face only statutory damages of either $5,000 or $10,000.
What is troubling me the most is who is going to watch the ISPs? So much noise is being made about watching and tracking users but no one is watching the ISPs. At least in Canada. I say put QOS and Code of Conduct laws in place first then consider protecting other countries faling business models. I certainly don't trust my personal information in the hands of a small local ISP. Would you?
http://www.writely.com/ - The REAL story is how fast AJAX is changing the web app landscape.
AJAX is the quiet revolution that Google has been lighting a fire under and I doubt MS has anything as nimble or elegantly simple then anything Google might be brewing. VISTA may have some tools to compete at a very basic level... maybe!
In the meantime... there's Writely... which looks pretty mature for a BETA AJAX application.
MS continues to slip further and further down the pole of irrelevance...
Vista is shaping up to be a featureless experiment in eye candy meanwhile MS continues to BUY (translate: innovate)trying desparately to remain relevent while the rest of the FREE market continues to be driven by CONSUMER INNOVATION, OPEN SOURCE AND GOOGLE!
You also seemed to miss the fact that Nintendo has already stated they will allow even single person game developers the ability to create content. This is the ace in the hole and most people already forget about this little "feature" While the PS3 and 360 will take major budgets and teams to produce for (which leads to less games over the lifespan and only "safe" games get made - like licensed games, sports, FPS, and some RPG's) the Revolution will get all the indie developers, homebrew crowd, and even new entries... remember shareware and ID? Well Nintendo could potentially be opening the doors to a hundred exclusive "ID's" on top of top-notch first-party titles and some solid third-party offerings.
Lets not forget the reason the console makers "give away" their consoles is so they can MAKE money on their CONTENT!
As most excellent point! I totally (not as in Bill and Ted) agree.:)
Fascist:A philosophy or system of government that is marked by stringent social and economic control, a strong, centralized government usually headed by a dictator, and often a policy of belligerent nationalism.
But no judicial oversight is required for these agencies so "oops" like these don't happen.
Do you think for a second that AOL, Google or MS would start yanking hard drives from server farms BEFORE asking a question or two to clarify the request.
If the intimidation was such that RackSpace felt compelled to comply for fear of reprisals then they shgould be talking to their Congressional and Senate representatives and NOT potentially ruining businesses for the sake of server logs!
I have long argued that the internet access business has needed regulations that govern Quality of Service, Code of Conduct and a Consumer's Bill of Rights.
The behaviour of Telus is outrageous and is probably a VERY SMALL tip on a MASSIVE iceberg.
As more and more services fight for consumer's internet pipe they should have protection against bad service and questionable tactics.
So the ruling American elite have struct a deal with the Central American ruling elite to protect each others interests... I'm wondering what exactly is FREE in all these FREE Trade Agreements the US is basically forcing it's trading partners to adopt.
Sad. Pretty soon there's going to be a law against FREE thought and FREEDOM of the 'RIGHT' Choice.
Please I hope id took out the light pen and hopefully hired some creative people that aren't stuck in hte mid 90's to work on this puck!
DOOM3 was an incredible waste of money and a HUGE embarrassment for everyone ay id. Kudos for hoodwinking the noobs but Quake 4 better have the goods and not just rip offs of other, pretty games like Half-Life2.
I mean please... the "new" anti-gravity weapon in DOOM3's expansion pack was a complete and utter disgrace! Not to mention that the guns were apparently sooo high tech they couldn't accommodate a simple flashlight.
Give me DOOM2 and Quake2 any day... at least they didn't pretend to be so ground-breaking!
Now Bush wants to TAG "potential" threats more commonly known are tourists.
The US is on a dangerous slope and its forcing it's trading partners to participate in this madness with NO proof that the information is ever going to be secure or not used for illegal or other purposes.
Considering the growing number of identity thefts and the misappropriation of government information one wonders just how long it will be before the next attack against America comes from within by its own using illegally aquired information!
This is exactly why there should be clear and simple regulations governing the conduct and responsibilities ISPs in Canada.
This is especially true with the resent changes to the Canadian Copyright Act that will force ISPs to track, record and store the movements of the customers.
These ISPs large and small are pretty much unregulated and in a time when personal privacy seems to have become a secondary consideration over profit consumers need regulatory protection.
Unfortunately everyone clearly understands why Ballmer now has to resort to the Jerry Springer routine about M$'s competitors (real or imagined).
M$ has never innovated, they have purchased and swallowed whole those who innovate using the horde of plenty they illegally received from their monopoly.
And that's the ONLY thing that keep M$ relevent today is their huge stash of cash.
If I recall the last original idea Microsoft had was called BOB!
Right on Ballmer... keep on using that mouth instead of the "big" grey blob that drives it and M$ will just become MORE irrelvent faster.
Come on... what fuckin' purpose could games like these possibly serve... Grand Theft SA pushed it too far as it is... assault your prostitute, kill your pusher competition...
Now that's what I call entertainment!
If the gaming industry keeps this shit up they'll end up were Hollywood is today... tons of shitty content and a massively shrinking audience!
Peer Impact shares a portion of the purchase price (up to 10%) with the member(s) who shared their content and their resources.
Ok... so if the songs cost a buck... and lets say they give you 5% of that is 5.
- 5 per song you share - share 20 songs and get ONE song FREE
And you have to download an application that I'm pretty sure is just loaded with all kinds of wonderful hooks to monitor if not cripple any other P2P application except Peer Impact.
And it's NOT iPOD compatible... iPOD users are about the ONLY people who buy music.
Private armies protecting US companies for a $1,000 a day per hired gun, driving around in brand new SUVs while regular US soldiers struggle to get flax jackets... it's no wonder the Army now wants to start conducting a marketing cull for America's youth.
Hey, I got a idea sign up for a tour of duty and get a FREE iPod! Yeah the US Army Rocks!
Yup... Sneak that flag in and really get consumers on side.
Fortunately I live in a country that stills allows people to record television... does that sound too fucked up or what. Anyway.
Keep on with these rediculous attempts to save dying business models. The consumer and hobbiest like nature will find a way.
Once these restrictions are in place Amercians can expect and very rapid descent into pay per view cablevision! And if you get caught recording its off to gitmo with your economic terrorist ass.
It sound to me like you Merricans could use another revolution! IMHCO (Canadian)
Not to mention that Steve Jobs is a chicken-shit who loves to rub Windows users noses' in their own shit but does want to hand them a tissue until they buy the box!
Listen after the fuckin' brutal user experiences Windows users have had to live with for the last 20 years do you really think they would look down at Apple if the INTEL version of their OS did run exactly like their PowerPC version.
BULLSHIT... excuses, excuses... he's a chicken-shit, plain and vanilla simple!
Come on... enoug of the piracy to spread acceptance theories for crist sakes.
If Steve Jobs had the balls. He would ship a version of his amazing OS X that would run on most current INTEL chips. Then we'll see who has the "best" OS.
But he won't and Apple will gain about 2% more market share and probably slap the living piss out of the first poor bastard stupid enough to post a modded version of his precious OS.
Yeah but there's always DARWIN! Sure... that'll shut'm up!

They said the same thing about email.
The masses don't give a rat's ass where it's done and saved as long as they can get to it whenever they need to.
Corporate use is an entirely different issues but I'm sure a version that runs on an internal server would be a BIG deal if the price was right.

50,000 people, mostly women and children, die in Africa every MONTH of preventable diseases that cost less than a cup of coffee to treat.
So as usual, the 15 second, 2 click attention span of North America kicks in and everyone goes back to bidding for garbage like this on eBay.
Talk about missing the god damn point of this weekend's message!
Enjoy your fucking light sabre DUDE!
