Fanmade Thief 2 Expansion Released

Anonymous writes "After 5 years of development, the fan-made Thief 2X has finally been released. It's an expansion for the now-defunct Through the Looking Glass's Thief 2, and it's free. It features 13 new missions, new weapons, new items, and a new heroine. A trailer is also available." From the site: "On May 25th, 2000, Looking Glass Studios closed its doors. The makers of intelligent first-person, story-driven games would no longer give us such immersive and harrowing experiences as we found in System Shock and Thief. Shortly thereafter, a group of designers, artists, writers, and audio talents joined to form TTLG's Dark Engineering Guild. If LGS wasn't going to make another Thief game, someone else would have to..."

Also, I've been playing it for a while. Considering the outdated engine, they did a good job, and the game's atmosphere has been done awesomely, too. Definite retail quality. Definite download material if you're a Thief 2 fan, IMHO. :)

Actually the consolitis is not that bad, and I always hated the monstrous levels of the first two parts. Besides that, the game has a much bigger feeling to it, since it is one big city where you can break in wherever you go, and just get your missions. Thief3 basically is the game I wished Thief1 would have been.

Big congrats to the the T2X team though, who started all this back when we weren't sure there'd be a T3. I look forward to playing this (and the Circle of Stone and Shadow, if that's ever finished....)

  6. Thief had redefined the FPS by DJ_Goldfingerz · · Score: 2, Interesting

I find the Thief series redefined what a FPS could be. The game had many things that made it unique. For one, you couldn't just attack a whole army of soldier, because you were guaranteed to get killed.

It also rewarded you for just sneaking around, stealing and not getting caught. At the time, it was the only game in the FPS category that you could complete without killing anyone. Even now, I haven't seen a game where you could do that.

The one thing that disappointed me the most was that no one else got into the thief genre. Once the company went belly up, I haven't seen a game that created the same tense, yet immersive environment that Thief 1 and 2 (haven't played 3).

I actually started looking at the project 3 years ago, but stopped checking its progress after about a year.
