Fanmade Thief 2 Expansion Released
Anonymous writes "After 5 years of development, the fan-made Thief 2X has finally been released. It's an expansion for the now-defunct Through the Looking Glass's Thief 2, and it's free. It features 13 new missions, new weapons, new items, and a new heroine. A trailer is also available." From the site: "On May 25th, 2000, Looking Glass Studios closed its doors. The makers of intelligent first-person, story-driven games would no longer give us such immersive and harrowing experiences as we found in System Shock and Thief. Shortly thereafter, a group of designers, artists, writers, and audio talents joined to form TTLG's Dark Engineering Guild. If LGS wasn't going to make another Thief game, someone else would have to..."
I couldn't find any reference to the licensing terms, but the main page has this at the bottom:
All Content Copyright 2002 Dark Engineering Guild. Well the content be further redistributable or usable in other projects?
(Oh, and first post).
Singularity: a belief in the "God" idea with the "demiurge" relation inverted.
Thief isn't gone. There's a Thief 3. I love this game.
will be very happy. On another note, they did make some pretty good games. System shock was badass, at least I remember it being, seeing as I haven't played it a long time. Its cool to see people that like games so much make their own expansion even after a company is belly-up.
Is this the worlds best fan made Thief 2 expansion pack?
Don't blame me, I voted for Cthulhu.
Looking Glass Studios is gone, although many of the employees did wind up working for Ion Storm Austin on Thief 3.
Big congrats to the the T2X team though, who started all this back when we weren't sure there'd be a T3. I look forward to playing this (and the Circle of Stone and Shadow, if that's ever finished....)
I find the Thief series redefined what a FPS could be. The game had many things that made it unique. For one, you couldn't just attack a whole army of soldier, because you were guaranteed to get killed.
It also rewarded you for just sneaking around, stealing and not getting caught. At the time, it was the only game in the FPS category that you could complete without killing anyone. Even now, I haven't seen a game where you could do that.
The one thing that disappointed me the most was that no one else got into the thief genre. Once the company went belly up, I haven't seen a game that created the same tense, yet immersive environment that Thief 1 and 2 (haven't played 3).
Thief 2X was released a while ago. I was playing it on holidays last week.
Trolling is a art,
"Thief" is not the preferred nomenclature. "Rogue," please.
Don't blame me, I voted for Durga.
According to a friend who began playing it about a week ago, it's not quite as good gameplay-wise as Thief 2, but is definitely better than Thief 3. Note that this friend thinks T3 is a good game, so really it's a glowing recommendation.
I actually started looking at the project 3 years ago, but stopped checking its progress after about a year. Amusingly enough, I ran into someone I haven't seen for nearly a decade, and when I asked her what she was up to she responded that she was voicing the main character of T2X and that they were wrapping it up. Knowing this, I have no choice but to play through the pack. Luckily, I know it will be very enjoyable, and luckily I downloaded it before the news hit Slashdot...
Your brain is not a computer.
Anyone missing the old theif games should check out the Splinter Cell series. The Splinter Cell series definately takes on a lot of qualities from the Thief series. I'm not sure if its possible to finish without killing anyone, but the stealth is amazing and adds a lot with the co-op.
