Japan's Top Five Features Mario Inspired Beat

News.com has up a short piece on a tune that's heading for number one with a bullet on Japan's pop music charts. The song, B-Dash, is a techno piece that heavily uses samples from the original Mario Bros. game. From the article: 'B-Dash' became a national hit after it aired on FM radio, and its popularity was further strengthened after it appeared on TV. The song has continued to stay in the top-10 rankings for the past month; last week, it ranked in sixth place. 'B-Dash' has sold a total of 196,000 CD singles in Japan to date."

      That depends on what the sampling laws are in Japan. Not all countries follow the same model as the US.

      The song's been out for a while, and there is no sign of it slowing down. Nintendo hasn't done anything about it, and I assume it has to do with the laxer parody laws that they have here. As they are not selling a video game called Super Mario, and are instead paying homage to it, I BELIEVE that it is not an issue legally.

      The B track on the single is great. It's just a techno loop of "My glasses are broken" for most of the song, and then at the end "No they're not!"

      I still have a VHS of The Adventures of Zelda with two episodes of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. I wonder if those actors killed themselved / got coke habbits or if they moved on to other work?

      Also, there's an excellent freestyle on Soulseek featuring Sage Francis and DJ Roux, with DJ Roux spinning Mario beats. And while I can't think of the name, The Dayton Family (Rap Personas Most Hard) has a track that is a medley of all the Mario music: Over- and underworlds, water, star, and dungeon.

    Among the people I knew when the game was initially popular, it was called B-Run. Is it now (in the homogenizing manner of the web) universally referred to as B-Dash?

    There is also an extremely popular punk group in Japan named B-Dash. They recently released a best-of compilation (to give some sense of the long progress of their career).

      Probably modded down because it's not a legitimate question for anyone with basic comprehension skills. It reached the Top Five and that's the news. It is still popular, currently remaining in the Top 10 at number 6, which is a "what's happening now" addendum to the news.

    This track reached no.2 in the British charts about 5 years ago, and pretty much consisted of one riff sampled from a Commodore 64 game ("Lazy Jones") with a heavy drum beat added.

    The C64's SID chip has something of a cult following, and has been turned into a musical instument in it's own right by these guys

      The Tetris song was a huge hit in the UK long before that - maybe 15 years ago? I forget exactly. It was around the same time it came out on original GameBoy.

    I was in Japan about 2 weeks ago and they were playing it everywhere. In the elevators, in the department stores. It was blaring in the streets of Akihabara. We even heard it out in the country in some old samurai town called Takayama, in a traditional restaurant.

    "B-Dash" uses sampled music from the original "Super Mario Bros." game released by Nintendo in 1985 and fuses it with techno beats and humorous lyrics such as "the princess might be a fake," "you might be using Mario too much" and "Luigi might get sulky."
