The only Yahoo! specific thing it does is the My Yahoo system of adding pages to a central server so you can take "favourites" with you between computers. The Yahoo search is an easy addition to the site searcher (defaults to Google, easy to switch), and the rest of it is just duplicating the bookmarks system. I'll ignore the "anti-spyware" stuff because that's Windows specific.

At least Google's toolbar does stuff like reporting PageRanks. This one seems to be bloat for the sake of getting a Yahoo logo onto your desktop.

Every single time the Yahoo Toolbar gets installed on one of my PC's at home I have nothing but trouble with the resources afterwards. The last time it snuck onto one of my computers at home was with the Macromedia Shockwave install. I've banned it's use and installation in my house. Anyone else have the same experience with this particular toolbar?

      Slashdot = Google Cheerleading.

The Yahoo Toolbar was even reported on Slashdot-- it wasn't that long ago:

I tested out the Toolbar as a way to keep Firefox's bookmarks synced on all my various workstations. It didn't work out too well.

You seem to be implying that Yahoo is copying Google. I can't believe I'm defending Yahoo, but this Google cheerleading has got to stop.

Yahoo released the beta version of their Firefox toolbar in February, months before Google Toolbar.

Yahoo has had the login on the right side of the screen for as long as I can remember-- 1997 or so?

The Google toolbar is mostly useless, but the Google Suggest extension is cool shit. It hooks into Firefox's built-in search box.

You should try the toolbar. It has a number of handy features. The "Save to My Web" button is very handy, as are the Yahoo Bookmarks. I also like having the "Translate Page" button for pages in languages I don't know. Also nice to have an "Add to My Yahoo" button for RSS feeds. The integrated Calendar support is handy as Sunfire still isn't quite there yet.

All in all, it's got something for everyone.

This post is simply old... I've been using the Yahoo Firefox toolbar for at least a month now... at work on Windows and at home on Linux.

I also have the Google Firefox toolbar and the Netcraft Firefox Toolbar.

The reason I have the yahoo toolbar is not for search (though I find the yahoo search very comparable to google - and much better at trawling the geocities websites). I use the yahoo myWeb and Yahoo bookmarks which are both available from the toolbar and allow me to save replicas of web pages that I find useful (so that they are cached at the state I want.. not whatever was last trawled by the search engine) and so that my bookmarks can be stored independently of the machine I am using... so links I find at home can be easily accessed from work and vice versa.

Alternatively, The google toolbar is useful for spell checking forms and blogging. And netcraft is just fun...

Yes all these toolbars do clutter my browser more than I like... and I wish I could manipulate the individual buttons more.. take the features I like off each and put on one toolbar... Hmm.. I probably can... I'll look into it and release a toolbar as soon as possible!

The "Save to my web" feature is really cool. I'm going to try it out.

If you're talking about the "My Saved Copy" feature, you really need to check out the Firefox extension called, "Scrapbook". That's got to be one of the top ten most useful fx extensions.

Another reference is the excellent book Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss. For those of us who are deeply troubled by the abundance of misused apostrophes and there=their=they're errors in many /. summaries, it's a quick read that sets the record straight on most common errors.

The reason I use it is because it carries my bookmarks / favorites, and other settings (groups, search prefs, etc.) not only from PC to PC, but also from Browser to Browser. I use IE at work (Corporate Standard), FF & IE on Windows at home, and FF on Linux at home. My settings follow me seamlessly on all 3 platforms, as well as any other PC I log into that has the toolbar.

If I am at work, and find a cool site, I can bookmark it and know I'll find it at home on my toolbar, regardless of what OS or Browser I am using on either end.
