PS3 GPU Less Powerful Than GeForce 7800?

dividedsky319 writes "The Inquirer (as well as a more biased Team Xbox) is reporting that the PlayStation 3's GPU will be a little less powerful than a GeForce 7800, which would also mean it's less powerful than the Xbox360. If true, what could this mean for the release of the PS3, a year later than the Xbox360 is released?" From the article: "It's all awfully confusing we know, though it is an interesting tech mystery to try and get to the bottom of. Of course Microsoft and Sony engineers all know exactly what's in the difference between the two consoles, but the marketing people want to tell us that their console is twenty times better than everyone elses, so we must wait until someone rips the two boxes open and benchmarks them..."

Derek Perez, NVIDIA's Director of Public Relations, was kind enough to provide us the actual paragraph from the September issue of PSM. Here is the information from the blurb in question:

There's no doubting that NVIDIA's new 7800GTX is the ultimate in PC graphics technology. The card's G70 GPU, which is more than twice as powerful as two of NVIDIA's previous top-of-the-line 6800 boards, shares a lot of similar workings with the PS3's RSX chip - only it isn't as fast. Oh, and it retails for $599.

The article actually says the GeForce 7800 GTX is not as fast as the RSX graphics processing unit that NVIDIA developed for the PlayStation 3.

Now what if I offered you in 1995, a choice of a PS3, or a NES, which would you take?

Many people probably have answered the PS3. And that would seem to be the right answer because it's a HELL of a machine.

Problem is that in 1995, PS3 had no games, hell 10 years later we don't have a Ps3 game, if you had the NES you'd have less power but you'd have a library of about 300 games for the last 10 years.

Now this question seems pointless, but there's a point. Simply that numbers mean NOTHING, XBox was much faster then the PS2, yet the PS2 trumped it easily. Why is that? Because the games. And it's not because it's japanese because the Gamecube was a good system, that didn't have games and had little support from third parties, and it lost to the PS2 also.

So basically numbers really don't mean anything, if you hear anything about them, ignore it, focus on the core issue, which system has the games I want to play.

The fact is it really is up to Games. Granted there's an influx of consumers on launch, but after the first flood, which while is a bit major doesn't amount to that much.

Here's the core problem, that you DONT see. Your popularity numbers really mean nothing to the company in the end. There's one factor that all companies care about (Yes even Non Profits) profit/debt. The Xbox lost money for every year it was out, except the last year. The surplus from the last year was actually only a small percentage of ANY other year. They lost a large amount, and a good amount (5 mill) also on Advertising. (don't know where that got factored in or if it did in the numbers I read)

The problem with the game industry is that a console being popular is ok, a console with popular games is great. Consider that for most consoles to just break even they have to sell at least a couple games (depending on source, price, and other factors from 3-10) which is why bundles are SO important to them.

However as the system ages the price goes down, however the price to make system fluctuates, it doesn't drop when the system drops. And that's the crux of the problem, you have to sell the games, and hence games is what makes a win.

Microsoft could EASILY have won this thing, if they had something like Mario and Zelda on their system, they could work it. But the problem is I look at their system and with the Exception of Team Ninja's fine work and Panzer Dragoon, I see mostly Sports and Racing games or games similar to other systems.

Then add in the factor that Japan didn't embrace them like they thought (and for that they were VERY stupid, Everyone else knew Japan isn't going to welcome Microsoft with open arms, they barely will accept most american game companies)

The thing to remember is that the Xbox could wow anyone, but until you have games that will look and use the system to it's potential, only people who believe in the company will jump on that system. (I knew a zelda game was coming I grabbed the Cube on launch, as well as Smash Brothers. I had to wait for GTA 3 for the PS2, but there was many other games worth the money for that system too. Ignoring the facts about the Xbox 360? It has been stated that the processor may not be all that it has been hyped to be. It has been stated that it will not include HD-DVD or Blueray so its transfers and size of games will be severly limited. Also, you think the Xbox had some good games that spanned across categories? Please name them, because i can name about..6-15, i can name about 60 on the ps2 and about 20 on the gamecube.
