      Slashcode is such a joke. Come on, pulling some text from a db and spitting it out to a web page IS NOT HARD! There is no reason for code to go live that is so broken as it is now. And before you blah blah blah me about whether or not I have done it, I have. I used to work for a porn site that got 10 times the visits this shit pile gets. Mod me troll, I could hardly give a shit. This just plain sucks. I mean the dupes, the grammar, the zonk "editorials", scuttlemonkey?? I had half a hope when they fired michael but, fucking christ.

      And to subtract more karma: I'm sure this site probably looks absolutely fucking great in IE on an XP box. I mean I bet it is the shit, a thousand times better than before. SO fucking fantastic, that the slashcoders are probably cracking open the champange congratulating themselves on a job well done. But, oh wait...I using the latest version of Firefox under linux. Isn't this site about open source? Maybe I should dig around to see if they incorporated any active-x...I surely must be missing something.

      There's two types of comments below: "This looks great" and "This looks like shit/what the hell is going on?" 10 bucks says the great come from windows users and the shit/wtf comments comes from non windows users. Hypocricy at its finest. Years and years of M$ IS TEH SUXORS but this code is optimized and tested for the windows versions of all the browsers.

      You owe ten dollars I guess. It works both fine and shit/wtf in Opera, under Windows. Refreshing a few times fixes it, but the next refresh breaks it again (although that actually has stopped now)

      I looked it up in the Firefox help and it's reload (ignore cache). I've never used it before, and I wonder why it works too.

      Because the page is delivering broken CSS stylesheets (i presume); ctrl+f5 forces a reload of everything including CSS data, which looks like does the trick.

    Glad to see this has happened, but at the moment the code isn't currently valid. Like the new subtleties of the design, particularly the reply page.

      All things considered, the code is *much* more valid than it used to be. It contains zero nested tables (or layout tables at all), and switching to the Transitional doctype reduces the HTML errors to alt attributes and URL escaping.

      No, it isn't. It's exactly as valid as it was before. Validity is a binary thing - a document is either valid or it isn't. Slashdot was not valid before, it is not valid now.

      Perhaps what you meant to say was that there were less syntax errors. This is true, however that does not translate into "more valid".

      That is not a matter of validity. The table element can be used in valid documents just fine.

      Oh man! We came soooo close to slashdotting the World Wide Web Consortium! They caught it just in time however and threw a 403: forbidden back at me when I tried the html validator link.

      Hopefully they don't use the power of CSS to make the site look too nice. It's crappiness makes it easy to pass it off as a technical or internal website when I'm reading at work.

      It could be worse. Looks like almost all those errors are from some nonexistent "nobr" element which every comment seems to have on it. One small fix, and there may be only a few bugs left. It's still much better than it was. :-)

    Is it just me, or is slashdot actually using CSS now? It seems a little spotty (I get unformatted pages being rendered occasionally) but, um, otherwise it looks good... well, the same, but using style sheets. Way to go slashdot crew - I hope the kinks get worked out shortly.

    At the time of this posting, Safari on Tiger does not seem to like the home page, or at least the home page's stylesheet. Seems to render okay in the G5-specific build of Firefox, though.

      Looks good here, Safari 1.3.1 (Panther) I think it's the exact same renderer as the Tiger version.

      Maybe a refresh would help?

    It has started, it looks weird. Actually, not "weird", it just resolves as if I was running an ancient browser. It still seems to work.

    OK, now I've got the familiar Slashdot comment submission page, looks OK so far. When I started typing everything was ordered down the page with no formatting - all the content was still there, though. That's how CSS is supposed to degrade.

    By the way, what's with all the people complaining about how the site looks? I'm using Lynx and it looks totally normal to me.

    I had to turn off lite mode in FF (been using it for years, too) because the site looks completely borked. If the owners give a shit, they should take a look at how it looks using FF (win32, 1024x786 res if that helps).

    I'm using light mode on FF on Windows and it's fine. Sure it looks like ass but I wouldn't expect otherwise from /. - I can still read the content and comments without the extra fluff, so who cares about the rest.

    I know how to permanently eliminate trolls from Slashdot and still allow anonymous posting of a sort. Here it tis:

    1. Set up a slasdotusers.com mail server and domain
    2. Require ALL Slashdot users to sign up for an e-mail address at this domain
    3. Make the e-mail account totally useless for anything other than verification (1K quota and 12 hour retention policy. You can do this with Exchange 2003)
    4. Do not allow people to use any other e-mail address for verification but these addresses
    5. Delete accounts that refuse to comply
    6. If anyone breaks any of the site rules, you can drop them like a hot potato and not have to worry about them faking another account through a different provider
    7. Require personal information to be tied to the account, but keep the registration simple
    so that people aren't truned off immediately

    This would ensure that trolls never roam about on Slashdot ever again. They wouldn't be able to get multiple e-mail accounts because they'd only be allowed one account on YOUR Exchange server for life. If they fuck it up, they're gone for good. See.... the moderation system isn't needed. It's always the simpler solutions that work out better in the end.
