This is all BS.. He is lying to please the government. In secret he still longs for the hack. I wouldn't be surprised if he was not working on self replicated robots to get the government back for such crap.
He copied code... Oh my God whooptie freakking Dooo. 98% of India, 90% of China, and 70% of the U.S. use copied binary/source code illegally, but you don't see the U.S. government destroying their lives.

If you don't want your code stolen don't write it.
If you want to make it hard to steal code encrypt, obfuscate, and secure it off the internet or intranet.

Your theory certainly explains the Robin Hood appeal. People who like the idea of the heroic outlaw, the noble bankrobbers, any of Clint Eastwood's good roles, rum-running gangsters... all are just a bunch of spineless cowards.

Don't get me started on those fucking negroes who broke Jim Crow laws, or the pizza delivery guy growing pot in his basement.
Execute each and every last one of the criminals, then work to eradicate this tolerance for criminal behavior from the populace until no trace of anti-authoritarian feeling remains.
In Europe they'd just release them into the general population and make them "pinky-swear" to be good.
