It looks like some sort of weird dual-orange juicer.

Has anyone else noticed how popular the "shiny orb" look has become recently? There are a lot of places now using the "shiny round button" as their logo. Weird.

Personally I hate "shaded" or three-dimensional logos. They quickly become tiresome. This logo will look cheap and dated 5 years from now, I guarantee it. I would prefer a more "timeless" logo, closer to monochromatic, two-dimensional. Something that could be sketched with a pen, yet be completely unique and recognizable.

I feel this logo has the most meaning only to those familiar with the previous logo (the beastie). A random person on the street (or in the boardroom) will not have a clue. And that's not good. For instance, why is the "horned ball" turned slightly? Just to show off perspective? To emulate the perspective of the previous logo? Why not just show the logo head-on, with symmetrical horns? Look at the black and white version. It looks like a drawing from a geometry textbook. A logo should be as minimal and simple as the font used to write the letters next to it.

I do like the font though. If the word FreeBSD were larger, and the logo smaller, I think it would look better, at least at the example I'm looking at.

Oh well. Anything is better than than the beastie from a corporate point of view, although this new one is utterly plastic and lifeless.

I don't agree with thinking FreeBSD becoming a bigger joke because I think it's very good, but I do have to agree with the feel of the logo. It's a bit too much like something for a gaming console, or some sophisticated toy. It lacks that touch of authority, the feeling of late night logging into work and do some command line maintenance. Or maybe I'm already getting too old, being over 30 and all. :-P

i seem to recall that there was a butt load of submissions. i think from a branding point of view, the winning submission is appropriate: it allows for various merchandise items to be branded consistently, including logotype and color variations. all in all i think freebsd will get alot of mileage out of the winning submission. that being said, it would be cool to see the other submissions, even if for nothing else for curiosity's sake. come on, let's see the losers!

Keep the daemon, but make it so that if you didn't know it was supposed to be a daemon... it's um... not a daemon.

I kind-of like the new logo, but I thought the point was to get rid of the demonic look. What has short horns and is red? Sure, I know what the old logo looks like, but I wonder what the uninitiated will think this is? You know people try to identify shapes.
