Indie Gaming on the XBox 360

cyrus_zuo writes "Game Tunnel took a look at some of the indie games that will be available when the Xbox 360 launches (through Xbox live). They've posted a summary that breaks down what people can expect from the oft ignored indie side of gaming, in addition to taking a quick shot at HD, calling it a 'marketing term that people have sold out to.'"

He also mentioned that most computer monitors have higher def than HD.

I didn't really see anything about what to expect from indie developers on the 360, except ports of successful indie PC games. Even so, there's potential for indie games to make a bigger splash than I would have thought in the console market.

I think that both the 360 and Revolution have potential to make indie games far more successful than they ever have been before, but both systems have problems which may prevent this from happening.

XBox live arcade seems to be very open for indie development, but it is unfortunately not that essential to the core XBox demographic; I'm not saying that no one is interested but a large portion of XBox fans are Graphic whores who are only interested in the latest and greatest 'Mature' games (a 2D puzzle game probably doesn't interest them).

On the other hand the Revolution virtual console has sparked the interest of a lot of 'old-school' gamers (believe it or not there are a lot of people who still love playing their NES/SNES and N64 games, the only way Nintendo could really improve on this for them is to include Sega Master System/Genesis emulation) but Nintendo may not open up these systems to development to indie developers.

Ultimately, one system has the fans, the other system has the developers.

Which is not true anyway. The highest-res monitor I have in my house - out of four - is my HDTV. It's 1920x1080 capable. Of the PC-only monitors I have, the highest-res tops out at 1280x800.

At work, I'm a little better off. I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display HD that hits 1920x1200. But this is a $1300 display, and most people don't have that. My PC monitor sitting next to it is only really capable of 1152x864 (that's what I run it at, though it's happier at 1024x768).

According to my own web stats that I keep for my web site, most users are still running at either 1024x768 or 800x600. Something like 80% of my viewers run one of those two resolutions.

So I don't know where he gets that "most computer monitors" have "higher def" than HD. You're still lucky to find a computer monitor with 1920x1080 resolution and if you do, you'll pay for it. You just plain can't find a PC monitor that'll give you that resolution at 50 inches, though (although when you're talking digital HDTV's at that size using HDMI inputs, there's really no difference anymore between a PC monitor and a TV anyway).

I'd say that this guy just doesn't quite get it. He doesn't really know what he's talking about; he can't seriously be arguing against HD. He can't seriously believe that HD is simply "marketing" either; the fact of the matter is it is much higher resolution than the previous NTSC standard. The fact that some PC-centric monitors now feature HD-like resolutions just means the PC world finally caught up, not the other way around. It doesn't diminish the fact that playing a game in HD will be a much sharper, clearer experience than playing the same game in SD would be.

The fact is that CRT PC monitors have done 1600x1200 for well over 5 years; monitors that display 1920x1440 or even 2048x1536 are not that hard to find (and both of those are progressive, not interlaced like 1080i). PC monitors have always had a higher resolution than TVs have mainly because, unlike images, text can not be displayed well on standard TV resolutions.

"According to my own web stats that I keep for my web site, most users are still running at either 1024x768 or 800x600. Something like 80% of my viewers run one of those two resolutions."

There is a reason for this, when you go past 1280x1024 on Windows the icons become too small to really see; text is easy to resize, but crappy pixelmap icons look really bad when resized. Also, don't forget that Window's defaults to 800x600 and a large percentage of the world can't configure anything in windows (not even their screen resolution or background image).

To transmit that amount of data through the air (with all the applicable standards, technical issues, and infrastructure required) is quite a feat. We're not talking the 6ft. from your GPU to your monitor here, we're talking broadcast. The reason that we have TVs at all is because of "big business". The reason we have HD content at all (and TVs) is because of "big business". Indie content is great, but is it driving the production of HD displays? No -- it's a fortunate byproduct riding on the coattails of an indusrty created by "big business". This sounds like a kid gamer mindlessly spouting the evils of "big business" (and frankly not the point of the article). When he grows up maybe he'll realize that even "big business" can be for good or evil -- it's up to the people who run it. I'm also detecting a little bit of anti-console bias here. I think this is probably the most under-reported story on the 360. Developers have traditionally not been able to break into the console space because the cost of entry is so high that you need sign (your life away) with a publisher.

XBox live arcade has the potential to turn that around, but I haven't heard the details. Is there an avenue in place for indies to approach Microsoft? Or is Microsoft simply seeking out the standout indie developers and paying them to port to xbox live?

Supposedly Nintendo's Revolution will have an even more robust pay-for-download model... I'm just hoping that will be an indie scene.
