Einstein's Biggest Blunder That Wasn't

jose parinas writes "The genius of Albert Einstein, who added a "cosmological constant" to his equation for the expansion of the universe but later retracted it, may be vindicated by new research. The enigmatic "dark energy" that drives the acceleration of the Universe behaves just like Einstein's famed cosmological constant, according to the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). Their observations reveal that the dark energy behaves like Einstein's cosmological constant to a precision of 10%."

Let's get some facts about job outlooks in IT, specifically in relation to what
would fall under the umbrella of programming or development. There are a lot of
people who talk about the sky falling, how there is no work to be had, how all
the jobs are leaving, and other doom and gloom scenarios.

    What are the facts?

The site divides software into the following groups:
    1. Programmers, those who translate a document into code.
    2. Applications Software Engineers, those who design and build applications.
    3. Systems Software Engineers, those who design and build systems.

    From the site....

    NUMBER OF JOBS
    Programmers: 396,100
    Applications Software Engineers: 439,720
    Systems Software Engineers: 321,120

    JOB OUTLOOK
Programmers: Employment of programmers is expected to grow about as fast as
the average for all occupations through 2012.
Applications Software Engineers: Computer software engineers are projected
to be one of the fastest growing occupations through 2012.
Systems Software Engineers: Computer software engineers are projected to be one
of the fastest growing occupations through 2012.

    MEAN PAY:
    Programmers: $66,480
    Applications Software Engineers: $78,570
    Systems Software Engineers: $83,460

The +5 insightful Slashdot opinion is most often that there are few if any jobs
on the software side of IT, that the jobs left are going fast, and that the
pay and perks are terrible. These statistics and outlooks contradict those comments.

You grammar people are always doing such things. Sure 'affect' makes sense in this sentence. But, he meant to use 'effect'. The inclusion of the term is going to greatly cause cosmological theories to come into being. What's wrong with that?

I hope this post effects thoughts in your head.

Heh. I tend to dislike the further/farther mess up a lot, because quite often with the metaphor of progress to distance a relative constant there's no gramamr policing going on.

I'm sorry. It turns out that english is a vibrant and organic language. Your efforts to impose rigid constraints and rules are futile and meaningless. If 'effect' wants to become a verb and if 'affect' wants to become a noun then that's the way it's going to be.

If people keep spelling night as nite, then 'nite' will become the correct spelling. If people want to use "your" instead or "you're", the that will be the course of english. If people want to switch around syntax, then switched around syntax will be. If people use "u" instead of "you", then you'll "hav 2 b kewl" with that.

You can accept the world we live in and the languages we speak as dynamic or you can lament over the "decline" of english by pining over pure and uncorrupted english sentences like this one:
"Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum eodcyninga rym gefrunon hu ða æelingas ellen fremedon.

This originally developed as a way to win arguments based on common errors in grammar for very long technical posts but this guy posted nothing flamebaitish. (omg not a real word)

Sure there are differences between "affect" and "effect" but can I remember them most of the time during a casual post in Slashdot? Hell no and I bet most of slashdotters make similar mistakes for quick posts. So if this makes me a retard with an IQ of 60 in your book then so be it!

Yes moderators should do their job and a +5 is overdoing it and not fair to the grandparent poster.

It's amazing how we can have a rational, civilized discussion about various hypotheses in astromony here on Slashdot, but the same is not possible with respect to evolution. I suppose these astronomical hypotheses don't challege people's fundamental world views, but they do when discussing evolution. This would explain the incredible emotional knee-jerk reactions when even mentioning evolution.
