Profitmon Catches The Dollars

An anonymous reader writes "The mainstream press has finally discovered the cash in anime. Fortune's Daniel Roth profiles ADV, the largest anime distributor in the U.S.. He uses it as a way to talk about how the anime and manga business has, in what's become a rarity in showbiz, managed to find a way to do 'more than not alienate its customers: It has found ways to keep them buying and buying.' The article also details the madness of the anime superfans--the Otaku--and the likely Neon Genesis Evangelion live-action flick that Weta's Richard Taylor is pushing for." Good Content + Bittorrent = Profit?

The best thing that ever happened to Europe was the black plague. This caused the end of the medivial era by reducing the population level to a point where a lot of human lives were suddenly important. For example, people could become blacksmiths and other specialties, not just one person out of a million and the rest of the crowd were just useless slaves.

To a certain extent the first world war served as a cut-off point between the industrial age and the modern era. Unfortunately, the war ended to quickly and this brought the second world war. This rocky road could have been averted had the war been conclusive.

It's worthwhile to note how many third-world countries suffer greatly from natural disasters while civilized ones just coast through them. For example, a storm may kill thousands in Haiti but be barely noticed in the Dominican Republic (same Carabean island). Some may point to the US failings during Katrina, but this was mostly a freak accident caused in part by the unfortunate apathy of governments for generations, and some technical mishaps.

The biggest problem in the third-world countries is over population. Too many people without jobs/carreers. Nothing to do. In such a situation, the Rwanda attempted genocide should wonder no one. Let's not be surprised if such action is repeated in places like Zymbabwe which has a large percentage of unemployment. Let's hope for his own sake that the current dictator Robert Mugabe passes away before this happens.

Every individual death is a sad event. The death of each victim of a plague is a tragedy, but in 100 years, many Africans will be thankful for AIDS as an unlikely ally towards self realisation. Let's also hope for the success of the coming Avian flu pandemic for the sake of south east Asia.
