Bridge Construction Set Contest

GameSetWatch is reporting that ChronicLogic (developer of goo-game Gish) is holding a Bridge Construction Set contest to see who can come up with an original 'cool-looking' bridge. Winners will be treated to a full copies of the company's games. The client to participate is free to download and futz with, so if you've an interest there is no excuse not to participate.

    They're giving away 2 games in a lottery and 2 games split between the winners of the "Normal" and "Expert" category. The winner of the "Artistic" category doesn't win any games.

    Wow, I'm just so eager to go and enter that.

      It's called building hype over a demo. A demo to a game which the publishers think will get you to purchase the full game, which is actually pretty fun. Especially if you're at all mechanically inclined.

      Chronic Logic give away four full versions of any Chronic Logic game (e.g. Bridge Construction Set, Gish) to the winners. One game will be awarded to the architects of the cheapest working NORMAL and EXPERT bridges. Additionally, you can win two games that will be given away by a lottery.

      Yup, this is nothing but hype. But what do you expect from a small gaming house fighting to keep their head above water. I mean, Chronic Logic had an impressive web hype-backed launch after their free Bridge Builder program made the rounds. Pontifex was their first product, and I'm willing to bet that it and BCS are two of their best sellers.

      Fast-forward to today: they havn't released a new iteration of the Pontifex 2 / BCS product in three years, and obviously they're not selling well anymore. In fact, Pontifex 2 v1.30 was renamed BCS just to give it a facelift, much like the naming games Nvidia and ATI play with "new" old products. I've noticed that community map development for BCS has slowed in the last year, and so has map competition contests. Bridge Builder, and the older Pontifex, on the other hand, seem to have a larger following. This is likey due to the fact that Bridge Builder is free, and Pontifex didn't require any special registration code if I recall correctly.

      They didn't make much coin on the BridgeIT fiasco, and I've never heard my mother (who is a flash / puzzle games fiend) talking about how addicted she is to Triptych. Hopefully, they'll release a new version of BCS that has some killer new "must-have" feature and graphics that don't look 10 years old, before they lose all their remaining mindshare.

      well, you have no reason to trust me but i can vouch for cronic logic and their bridge games. spent all of yesterday playing bridge builder ( a 2D precursor to pontifex and BCS )

    According to the URL Bridge Construction Set is just a different name for Pontifex 2. What forced them to change the name like that?

      Google me this Batman

      Bill Budge was the Apple II graphics guru. By the time he wrote a library for creating 3-D wireframe games and a game using that library ("Tranquility Base") in 1981, he had already authored three other Apple II games. He's also the original king of computer pinball, a title that seems to exchange hands monthly these days.

    "They" is essentially one person. If we were talking about EA, it might be a matter of priorities or market share. With one dud, it's more likely a matter of deciding which things he'll likely get done in time and which not, always provided his cat doesn't eat the power cable and there's no traffic accident in the family.

    1. How do you stop the bridge falling into the river? The bits connected to the riverbed seem to just sink down.

    2. Why does my game look nothing like the screenshots? There's no detail, it's ugly and slow as well.

      1) Experiment. The third demo took me a long time to just get a structure to support but it works.

      2) Your graphics card either sucks or doesn't work well with the game. Graphic options can be adjusted in game.

      My guess on the slowness is that you are not using 3d accel drivers (or don't have any) for your video card.
