Google to Buy Opera?

patro writes "Opera Watch writes Google is planning to buy the Opera browser. The source of the claim is Pierre Chappaz, the former president of Yahoo Europe. Google obviously can't buy Firefox, so Opera might be the next possible candidate." I can't begin to imagine why.

Google Earth, Google Maps, Google SMS, Google Blogsearch, they're all applications

They aren't applications, they are toys. Yeah they are neat to play with, but they aren't exactly something that businesses will use everyday for anything that matters.

Well, If I were MS, my browser would suck so I would buy Opera and then kill it, to gain some playspace for my own browser. In case of Google, where the team probably could develop a browser as good as Opera in a few weeks, there are not many points for buying it. Perhaps there are some patents Opera may have, so Google could get the patented technology, assemble it in a more capable browser (mozilla code probably) and throw it out as GBrowser. Sounds OK to me..

  3. Great news - the bloatware Firefox will finally go by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Flamebait

I'm eager to see the buggy bloatware called Firefox disappear in obscurity. Opera (and yes IE too) are by far *superior* to all Mozilla browsers. Great news! If they make Opera open source (but don't allow any progamming newbie to fuck up the code, as it happened with Firefox), then it's definitely good bye for Firefox.
