Is This Rembrandt a Real One?
Roland Piquepaille writes "About a year ago, I told you about how computer scientists from Dartmouth college were investigating digital images. But they're also interested in old paintings authentication, as reports Wired Magazine in The Rembrandt Code. Mathematicians are using high-resolution digital cameras and computers to examine old paintings and evaluate their authenticity. Even the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is asking them to discover which of the 42 paintings it owns and that were once believed to be Rembrandts are really authentic. The Wired article is pretty entertaining, but this overview contains more details, pictures and references about this authentication process."
Well, is it?
Our plan is working -- GET THE FACTS!
Not only that - complaining about this (and the related ** Beatles Beatles shenanigans) is a good way to keep yourself from getting mod points ever again.
it's a blue bright blue Saturday hey hey
you didn't know the /. & Zonk were both part of the Illumaniti?
:-)
Naw, they can't be because I don't see them on our rolls......

Thank god, I'm tired of the pressure of having to moderate. Now I can just read at +5.
I hate pipsquekale.
"Oh, you hate your job? There's a support group for that, it's called everyone, they meet at the bar."
I think the problem when issues like this are raised, is that people are coming to /. with slightly wrong intentions. This place seems to act to too many as a battleground to butt egos against each other, when really this is a news site. People come here to read the latest News for Nerds(tm) and there shouldn't be an issue with who is providing the news, unless of course there is abuse taking place. However with this article, and many of the others submitted by the author, it seems that this is in the foremost news, so be glad that someone has found it and posted it for you to view.
do.what.promptcmds
My guess would be that it has something to do with blowjobs, a tried-and-true, traditional method of gaining favor throughout the world. Either that or Zonk and Roland are one and the same person.
Max
My god carries a hammer. Your god died nailed to a tree. Any questions?
but can anyone tell me here whether or not the Slashdot editors have addressed just why it is that so many of Roland Piquepaille's articles get posted
Well, now that you have asked, Slashdot users are working on a sophisticated computer algorithm to tell Roland Piquepaille's articles from real Slashdot stories.
Take the cheese to sickbay, the doctor should see it as soon as possible - B'Elanna Torres, "Learning Curve"
I think its mainly because Roland keeps on spamming slashdot with stories so he gets more ad hits on his blog. It personally pisses me off that they keep feeding the spammer, he is brute forcing slashdot.
well, from now on, boycott any article submitted by him. and spread the word. if i had mod points today id mod you up because i agree its pretty fucking ridiculous. also, mod any of his posts down. (it looks like this already happens.) if others disagree, let them metamoderate accordingly.
Windows is like decaf - it tastes like the real thing, but it won't get you through the day.
Doesn't matter anymore. The links in his article are to real sites. The only link to his blog is in his name - and all submitters do that. The controversy a while back is when the main link in his submission was to his blog (which seemed only to copy-and-paste or provide only slightly more information than the actual news report.)
Thanks Roland.
Some submitters link to their email address only, or do not link at all. PageRank == $$$$. Slashdot editors seem to be preferentially giving free PageRank to certain submitters (including Roland and BeatlesBeatles).
Does anyone dispute these facts?
it's a blue bright blue Saturday hey hey
Replying to my own post, because I found something useful: rpiquepa is his Slashdot account. You will notice two things: first, he seems to have stopped portraying Primidi (his site) as the major post. Second, in a nice karmic balance, people are ripping off his original work from Primidi. :-)
Whoah. Hold up here.
/. with submissions and then marking my blog (Heavily ad-sensed, of course) under my name?
I can make money by spamming

He's still doing it. "The Wired article is pretty entertaining, but this overview contains more details, pictures and references about this authentication process." The "overview" lauded as better than the original Wired article is Roland's blog.
http://slashdot.org/~rpiquepa = teh real
For those keeping score at home
- ScuttleMonkey = 10
- Zonk = 5
- Timothy = 3
- samzenpus = 1
- ????????? = 1
Draw your own conclusions (in pencil please so you can erase mistakes)Here's a past thread with much bitching and moaning about rpiquepa's submissions.
[Fuck Beta]
o0t!
He might well be promoting his site, but his articles don't come in every single day. If someone writes enough good articles and submits them regularly, who is to say that he can't?
Now back a few months ago when each story he submitted went to his blog, which was invariably a link to the REAL story, I agreed with you. He was just getting clicks and ad-views. Slashdot was being used to make him money.
But look at the story that was posted today (and the other recent posts by Roland). There are no links to his blog (except his name). So unless you are TRYING to get there, you get the same links I or anyone else would have submitted.
He finds interesting stuff, submits good summaries (as opposed to those that get through every once in a while where you have to wonder "What does that mean?" or the summary is just plain WRONG), and isn't taking advantage of Slashdot (anymore). It's time to stop complaining about him. At this point, you are just going for karma. I don't see any other reason to complain.
Comment forecast: Bits of genius surrounded by a sea of mediocrity.
How hard is it to cut and paste from Wired? Every new article posted there must get submitted to Slashdot dozens of times. Just thay choose to use Roland's, with his links to his blog. If Roland was digging up obscure stuff no one else did it would be a fair exchange. Since he's French, why doesn't he ever submit French articles? He can't be bothered to translate perhaps, would take more than 5 minutes cut and paste.

Ah, so that's what happened. I thought it was because I was a Republican . . . I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the two.

Wow. That's really funny, because I thought it was because I was a Democrat. . . I wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact the reason why....

Oh, and yeah, http://slashdot.org/~Roland%20Piquepaille is a troll (though he seems to be inactive since August).
Windows is like decaf - it tastes like the real thing, but it won't get you through the day.
Yes there are. Look at the "overview" that "contains more details, pictures and references" than the Wired article; though it's all cut and pasted from it and one other by the same scientist quoted in the Wired article.
Windows is like decaf - it tastes like the real thing, but it won't get you through the day.
For what it's worth, I get plenty of mod points (pretty much every week or two), and I'm definitely a Democrat (in fact, I'm on both your Friends and Fans list). Supposedly, the more regularly you post and meta-mod, the more likely you are to get Mod points - and the less often you are meta-modded unfair.
Ok, so the very first post to this thread was modded up as +5, Informative and was somewhat critical of the Slashdot editors. This post and EVERYTHING underneath of it were completely and totally modded down by someone with unlimited mod points. This is blatant censorship on the part of one or more of the Slashdot editors. Most of the people that post here on Slashdot do so with the understanding that their posts are made in good faith, particularly those of us who are paid subscribers. I have been a Slashdot user for years (User ID# 18351) and have been a paid subscriber for some time. I object most strenuously to this censorship and request from the Slashdot editors a response to this matter.
Visit Jonesblog and say hello.
Count yourself lucky. I don't even get meta-moderation powers anymore.
Hey Slashdot Editors -
You have at your disposal, at your beck and call, a community of geeks with lots of expertise in every technical discipline, who can debunk false claims by industry pundits, help to educate their peers, and share valuable information with the larger community. This is an incredibly valuable and useful resource that can contribute to improvements on the Internet and the technological revolution in which we are all participating.
If you're going to put us to use to make some money with ads, at least pay some fucking attention to us and our wishes.
it's a blue bright blue Saturday hey hey
Why not live in ignorance ? In this case you'll die richer :-p
Well, someone as Slashdot cares, given that three of my posts in this thread and many others were all simultaneously modded down to -1.
