Microsoft Ends Windows Media Player on the Mac
alphasubzero949 writes "According to News.com, Microsoft has had no plans to update or improve Windows Media Player and has instead thrown its weight behind a third party plugin to fill the void. Adam Anderson, Microsoft public relations manager, told News.com, 'It's basically a business decision for Microsoft. Like any other company, we have business priorities. Our focus really is in delivering the best experience to Windows customers.'"

Apple continues to release overpriced, underpowered x86 machines. Marketshare remains the same - a wash of people leaving the platform countered with the curious current x86 owners with more money than sense picking up new Apple hardware.
Intel continues to put out hot, underpowered chips that are constantly one or more quarters behind. But they all manage to crank out really high SPEC scores from Intel's SPEC compiler - surprise!
Internally Apple prepares for the phasing out of x86 hardware with the hope that they manage to land one or more major x86 OEM bundling deals.
Worst case they are prepared to abandon OS X as a it currently exists and focus completely on the media/iPod/iTMS side of the company.
Internal debate as to whether or not to abandon Darwin and go with Linux. Apple internally gets Cocoa/Carbon APIs running on top of both Linux and Vista.
By a year or so from now the gloves will be off between Apple and Microsoft. With Apple going straight for the heart of Microsoft with cross platform OS X application/media APIs and free dev tools that generate one click universal Vista/Linux application binaries.
IBM giving Apple the finger over the mobile G5 design probably accelerated all of Apple's contingency plans. Everything rides on Apple's ability to keep the iPod sales growing and expanding into new digital media areas.
The x86 hardware will most certainly be gone within a year or two for Apple - only the most diehard Apple fanatic can possibly believe the x86 is waiting around to pay huge markups on x86 boxes just to run OS X.
Regardless of when Apple dumps the x86 hardware, open warfare between Apple and Microsoft is here. Office support is of course the next major event. Apple is going to be kicking themselves for blowing off OpenOffice support on OS X and fucking around with toys like Pages.
Lets see, MS gave us WMV. Nasty but at least mplayer by using windows codecs can play it trouble free.
Apple gives us quicktime MOV. I don't know what it is but either Apple constantly is pumping out new versions or nobody else using linux is willing to do all the hardwork for me for free and get it running properly. Or put it simpler. MOV files are always a bitch to run.
As for the players. WMP sucks donkeyballs but Quicktime swallows donkey cum. There is only 1 player worse then WMP and that is quicktime and to add insult to injury quicktime movies tend to more troublesome when playing in alternative windows players.
I hate MS but I loathe Apple. The only reason Apple is less deserving of scorn is because they ar just to small to worry about. For now.
But let us not forget that for all the pampering MS does to the big content owners (DRM pushers) Steve Jobs is in bed with them offering him his big white ass for their enjoyment. Where everyone else has realized you can only ask for money once Apple is still trying to sell both the encoder and the player. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY TO VIEW TRAILERS.
Ah well, MS not going to bother with updating player for free on a competitors OS. Wow, shocking. It is not like anyone still thinks MS is a monopolist who could abuse its dominant market share to control the market.
