When Data Goes Missing Will You Even Know?

Lam1969 writes "Jack Gold says IT shops may have a huge problem on their hands, and probably don't know even know about it. The problem is USB flash drives, which he predicts will probably reach 10 GB in capacity in three years, and the lack of policies to guide use of them by employees. From the article: 'With more and more employees using flash drives, smart phones with Secure Digital memory cards, portable hard drives, etc., the likelihood of companies actually knowing about all instances of data loss is declining rapidly. And as a result, the possibility of companies breaking laws, whether for data-loss disclosure or regulatory compliance, is growing dramatically.' Gold predicts 'at least one publicized major case of unencrypted data loss from a portable device' in the next year, which will result in many companies banning these kinds of devices."

  1. Corporations will try to use the courts by Infonaut · · Score: -1, Troll

Employees have had the ability to steal corporate data for years. E-mail, CD-ROM drives, tape backups, iPods - the list of mechanisms that can be used to disseminate secrets is long and just grows longer every year. The problem isn't a particular mechanism for theft, it's that there are so many of them. If you're trying to safeguard your secrets through merely technical means, you're fighting an uphill battle.

While corporations will fight this through technology as much as possible, I think over the long term corporations will push for more vigorous legal punishment for corporate data thieves, and for more capability to actively monitor the employee communications, even when they're outside of the office. Their argument will be that since business is often done outside the office, as employers they should be able to safeguard their data beyond the company's physical boundaries. Whether corporations succeed or fail depends on whether voters think privacy is important or not. I suppose it also depends on how effectively corporations tie their cause to the "War on Terror" bandwagon. Thus far in the US at least, people have proven remarkably willing to give away all kinds of rights whenever someone ties anti-privacy legislation to the struggle against extreme fear.

  2. People here don't read TFA by tabbser · · Score: -1, Troll

Your obvious mistake was assumining that the hoardes of illiterate extreme left wing morons here actually RTFA, which they didn't.
I just got back from the pub and each time I post about these morons after I got home from the pub and have about the most unadulterated honesty in my system I get banned for a month, but I really don't give a fuck.

I read TFA, which is better than 50% of the folks here, I have a girlfriend, which is better than 50% here. I also happen to own my own business and driver a new Porsche Carrera, which is better than 99.9% here. The fact I think 75% here are younger than 21 and have extreme trouble differentiating their ass from their elbows ... well, that's just priceless.

My cat is smarter than 50% here.

Leather, leather, it's made of skin... and it takes off skin. That much Sabrina had already
found out on her first day at the residence of Dr. Bilby. Quick girl! Don't just stand there
or are you waiting for another thrashing?? Theresa shooed the idly waiting girl out of the
corridor because she knew the Master would be up and about in a few minutes. Theresa meant
well with the new arrival and yet this time she couldn't prevent it. In her fright Sabrina had
turned around the wrong corner, bumped into the wrong person with the wrongest thing she
could possible have in her hands. Nothing. Mr. Pierces right hand shot up and grabbed her by
her blonde hair forcing her on her toes. Young lady, I thought I had made myself clear! A
good housemaid is always carrying something in her hands and if it's only her head! Very well,
girl, I see the lesson wasn't learned so I shall be glad to repeat it yet again! With these words he
yanked her forward by her hair and threw open the door to the cellar with the other. He dragged
her down the stairs, not caring whether or not her little feet found purchase on the narrow stairs
leading down into the cold and damp underground chamber of torment. Here she would strip and
here he would blast her body with straps of leather and school canes. He would whip her budding
breasts as hard as her thighs and her thighs even harder than her bottom. Soon blood would
    run under her armpits.

Dr. Bibly laughed. Where's the new wench? he asked Theresa. Oh she's waiting in the library for
you. Mr. Pierce is still busy with getting pages of the Deuteronomicon to stick on the backs of her
knees, last time I checked but she sure bled plenty under her arms and Marcus and John are already in
    place there.

Thank you! Thank you SO MUCH for your applause! If "what the hell" is the first thing that came to your mind reading one of my stories then I have done well. I strive hard to leave the reader feeling just a touch weird and maybe even a tinge disgusted.

You just fed the troll of course and that means I'll keep coming back for MORE MORE! MORE!!!!!!!
