Square Enix's CG movie based on Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children, has a U.S. release date. This comes after a long delay and the promise that the title would be out 'sometime in 2006. From the 1up.com article: "1UP is glad to inform you that the DVD and UMD will ship in the U.S. on April 25, 2006. So in case you haven't already downloaded the movie from the Internet (bad, pirates, bad!) and are looking forward to seeing this hour-and-a-half slice of CG Final Fantasy fan-service for yourself, you've roughly two months to go."

  As someone who contributes to the weekly subtitling of bleach, I care. Advent Children is high quality and a very good movie. Bleach is a good series, but this isn't about bleach. Just becuase YOU don't like FFVII dosen't mean it dosen't have value. As well, bleach is expected to soon suffer from a minor case of the 'Naruto Effect', that of which being a long period of filler away from the main plot, althogh in bleaches case creating a new subplot, but becuase everyone wants to know what happens with the Aizen saga, and the leader of the Gotei 13 simply saying 'We don't have to worry about it for a year' Is the same thing thats going on with naruto, and has cuased its ratings to drop so much and it's following to dry up.

  No, seriously, why? I mean, I liked them up until they hit the PlayStation, and then from there on out they stopped concentrating on gameplay and started concentrating on graphics. When they released the Final Fantasy movie and Final Fantasy Online, it became clear that they no longer cared about the series, only about making money off the fans.
  
  I just don't get why people are still fans of the series.

  I want an RPG where you don't have to wait during the fights. I want the action to be snappy. A spell doesn't need to last 10 seconds to be impressive.
  
  For example a "blizzard" type spell doesn't need to have a "snow concentrates around the enemy" -effect before the giant glacier impales the wictim. Also, summon spell could be short like "in the old days" when Ramuh came to the battlefield, some lighting shot around the screen, Ramuh left. This took maybe 2 seconds.
  
  Yes, "slow" powerful spells might look really cool, but they start to lose their charm when you've seen them 20 during this one boss fight. Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call has a pretty good battle system from what I've seen. Attacks last maybe a second, and it's all like "wham, bam, splat" and your party is done and it's time for the next round. I really don't need to see the hero running to the enemy, take a swing and run back. I'm willing to tolerate something like Cloud's Omnislash or Squall's Lionheart, as long as the attack does damage from beginning to end.
  
  At least have "fast battles" as an option. And get rid of random encounters (and that's apparently what has happened with FFXII).

  I've liked them since the beginning. I started with FF on my crappy nintendo. Then came 2, 3, etc. Yeah, the games have some weak points, but it doesn't bother me. FF9 was the last one I completed. X just hasn't held my interest very much. I haven't played X2 yet, XII I have absolutely no interest in.
  
  Why do I like them? I don't know. Its probably because FF was the first game I fell in love with. Kinda like that first car that sucked ass, but you'll always love it.

  At least both Bleach and Naruto are still on the air, with the return to actual manga storyline in sight. Take Rurouni Kenshin, which went to fillers after about episode 60 (for 30+ more episodes). Those were so bad they ended up CANCELLING the anime entirely, ensuring that the last manga arc never got animated properly, and forcing the animators to do really weird OVA alternate endings.

  I don't want them to remove the wait in fights system, I hate the new fast ones where you have to button mash your way through the menus to get that powerfull spell 5 menus in, and I like long shiney attacks under summons and the like. If they ever were to remove that from the games I would stop playing them. I think they should make both options available and afaik they did so in FFX (might be my mind messing with me tho). And nooooo i love random encounters, why would you remove those? :,(

  Well I'm all for having fast battles as an option, and maybe "show previously unseen moves the first n times, otherwise do not wait." Hell, throw in an option to show longer, more flashy moves for all I care.
  
  As for random encounters: I hate it when I'm trying to explore some place, trying to find hidden bonuses and stuff and I have to fight some annoying little critter every 5 seconds.
  
  And since fights are such a big part of RPGs, I want them to be snappy.

  While I understand what you mean and I too have gotten rather annoyed at times when I ran around exloring a big places and I run into monsters all the time, I think the Random Encounters are vital to FF games and the way you play them and I would never wish them away.
  
  In the newer games the have made No-Encounter abillities you can activate if you so desire anyways, so there is a way to get around it. For example the GF diablos in FFVIII has Half-Encounter and later No-Encounter and you can get weapons with these abillities in FX awswell (don't remember FFIX well enough to comment here though).

  Heh, it sounds like you're just like me, loved the original Nintendo/Super Nintendo games, but got fed up with the PlayStation ones. Except that I just kinda got turned off on Final Fantasy all together, but you're still willing to give it a chance, which is fair enough. I do have to admit I've been getting all the rereleases for the GBA.

I always have troubles with "Dated". Did it get a date with some girl or boy program? Is it archaic, sort of in the way Mary Poppins is "dated"? I realize it means that the thing has had a date set, but I always get the "has time period specific references" dated before I get "has had a date set" dated.

Does anybody else get this confusion?

  I agree, when I first read the headline I assumed it meant "dated" as in archaic (i.e. your Mary Poppins example). Maybe "Release Date Set" would have been better suited than "dated".

Yeah, but had I not downloaded the movie I probably wouldn't have even cared to own it on DVD. A decent amount of the hype surrounding the American release is from all those who've already seen this incredible movie and are clueing their friends in on it.

  Incredible? I don't know if I'd go that far. It was okay, it was better than "The Spirits Within" (for whatever that's worth), and the CG was pretty good, but it's a long ways away from "incredible".

  A note on the pirating:
  
  I downloaded the movie and watched it. I didn't much like it and I won't be buying it. Thats money lost to pirating to the studios, but its also a breakdown by the studios in two avenues.
  
  1. There was such an incredible lag between Japanese and English releases that Those that really wanted to watch it (like me) downloaded it anyways.
  
  2. The movie was a VERY niche piece. If you haven't played Final Fantasy VII (recently) you won't get WTF is going on. If you have played FF7 recently the thin plot will at least make sense.
  
  CGI was great, but (angry voice) CGI doesn't make a good f*cking movie just as graphics don't define a good game.
  
  Now, if they had done an international release within a reasonable amount of time, I would've gone to a rental store, rented it, hated it and lived my life all the same. But, the movie studios that made this would've received some marginal compensation for it. If they made a better movie, they'd be $30 richer (- the overhead).

  The whole movie is pure fan service. People who have not played FFVII will get nothing out of it. Well, maybe they'll like the cool stuff, but they will have no idea who the characters are and why should they care.

  *chuckles* ... to be fair, the plot of MANY stories is similarly simplistic, when you boil it down. Check out the "tales for the l33t" flast videos, which reduce Shakespeare to some stick figures and IRC-esque lines.

  Ironically, I actually found it enjoyable entertainment -- and it did a VERY good job of capturing many core parts of the story.
  
  The ascii star wars project (I forget the URL or name ...) is similar.
  
  Just because the plot can be simply summarized doesn't mean that the story can't be fun to watch. Heck, all the Robin Hood movies I've ever seen had very thin plots, which is evident when you see it a first or second time. But I still love them.

  Define "decent amount". All the hype I've heard has been through official channels. Granted, I don't hang out with a bunch of pirates (arr!), but if the hype you're referring to is only reaching other early viewers, then your argument is meaningless.

  "The Spirts Within" was a total train wreck. For what it was, it was good, but what it was, was the second half of a Final Fantasy game done in CGI with overkill realism that seriously overbudget. If they had rendered the entire film in the same CGI quality of FF8 and 9, it would have been less expensive, and the viewers who had played the games would have an easier time relating it to their in-game experiences. If square redid the visuals to FF8-9 quality, I'm fairly certain they'd get people who'd buy that rendition. It would also help if they wrote the beginning of the story and put that out.

  As a big fan of the FFVII video game, I thought the movie was the biggest piece of shit imaginable. It's not easy to make a movie worse than "Spirits Within," but they somehow did it.
  And the posts saying "why buy it unless you've first downloaded it and then want to give them the money for it" are off-base - essentially Sony would be counting on donations! Maybe a very few people would abide by the system but obviously it's unworkable on any large scale.

Oh please. I downloaded it, and watched it the day it was available online. Guess what? I'll be first in line to buy a copy when it comes out. Really, what do you think the % of people who will buy this haven't seen it already? I'd think it would at least be in the high 90s.

Anyhow this attitude pisses me off. Yes I download music, games, movies, and TV shows. Know what else? I also buy a crap load of music, games, movies, and TV seasons. Some of my downloading is to try before I buy, other times it's because I don't feel like ripping 10 gigs worth of CDs, and crap if you watch '24' or 'Lost' missing an episode is like having one of your fingers cut off.

  I wouldn't worry about this hurting the sales even though it's been out in Japan for ages. Some companies (I don't know about square-enix) have formed agreements with fansub sites to help promote the official release and either turning a blind eye or allowing the fansubbed version to be downloaded. That is, until the official release is out and then they politely ask the people to stop distributing the non-official version. I think it's a good practice especially one that works with the flow of information on the net. I don't have the reference links on hand, but you can google it yourselves. Anyways, if you're a pirate, you're always going to pirate. If you're a die-hard fan, you're going to buy it even if it sucks. At least this type of good practice will make the consumer feel better about shelling out money for a good product.

I've downloaded FFVII:AC and watched it multiple times. However, you can be damn sure I'll be first in line when this gets released in the US. Hell, it might even be my first UMD movie (only if packaged with the DVD).

  Nah I know a bunch of other people who bought the undubbed, unsubtitled import. I've watched both that and the fansubbed download and I can tell you that it's almost better watching the Japanese version. Let's face it, the plot's nigh unto incomprehensible, even for a hardcore FF freak like me. I still loved it though and I'll still be another first in line to buy it.

  Because the action was A-FRIKKIN-MAZING! Easily the best action sequences I've watched in years, even beyond Casshern (which was another great but incomprehensible movie). It's all such delicious eye candy...mmmmmmm....*drool*

Yeah I downloaded it. I was WAY looking forward to it, but was so damn disappointed it's crazy. There's no fucking plot whatsoever. Some bullshit about Jenova's head and creating more Sephiroth and.... look.... I fucking hate RPG's and I hated FFVII but I was honestly excited about this because finally these badass characters would be in an enviroment where they could best be utilized... and instead they chose to cheap out and turn the movie into relentless fight scene bullshit with enough self-references to make you puke. Nobody but Cloud and Tifa are in enough of the movie to be useful. In fact, they didn't even need everyone else to show up.

The movie fucking sucks, and I'm not even trolling. It's not a good story, it was shittily directed, and Nobuo has no fucking clue how to score a movie.

I'm STILL waiting for these characters to get the treatment they deserve.

I really enjoyed that game. Probably as much as FF9. (Which I haven't finished)

  FF7 Advent Children was an AWESOME movie, I've watched it nearly a dozen times with subs and without subs, mainly cause it's a 2 hour action sequence of the utmost quality.
  And to everyone talking about watching dubbed anime: Stop watching that shit. Watch the fansubbed version put out by various groups, as american dubbed anime is editted and literally raped to hell and back and for the most part are nothing like their original forms.

  Most anime don't have 200 episodes (except for rubbish like DBZ and Naruto). The standard is either 26 or 13 episodes. Normally you can get a box set with a 26 episode series for about 60 of your American dollars.
  If you can't spare $60 for 26 episodes of anime, then I wonder how you can afford the broadband connection to download them, or a computer to watch them on.

I saw a fan-sub, and it was GREAT!!! Now for it in ENGLISH!!!! 10/10 for the Japanese version, and hopefully the English dub will reflect.

I'm an FF fan. Thus I DON'T care.

This latest wash of sequals, re-releases (some of which were, admittedly, a good thing), and spinnoffs has me really pissed at Square. I love the Final Fantasy series. Call me a purist, but I'm not touching their cheesy spinnoff market. No balls, I tell you, they don't have the guts to make a game that will be judged by it's merrits alone, they have to have it be connected in someway to a previous game (not even designed to have a sequal). It's bad enough the whole series, of which there's very little connection, falls under the same umbrella title.

But seriously, I thought FFVI -> FFIX were all 5-star games, FFX was a bit of a dissapointment, and I'll have to get my hands on FFXII, but considering the crap that they've put out under the FF name in between X and XII, I think Square may have lost me.
